Following my
previous post....
Last Time
1. I remember text books were thicker and heavier. Somehow, I remember having a lot more books, or a lot more bulk. Oh yes! There was science also.
2. Book purchase was a chaotic exercise with parents and students all crowding around the temporary book counter at the canteen trying to pick up all the necessary books. Nobody bothered to pre-pack the books and every year, there was bound to be one or two books out of stock and we had to make a trip to Bras Basah to hunt for the books (Popular not everywhere yet), or wait for school term to start and get from the school bookshop. I remember having to go day after day to enquire.
3. After buying all the things on the booklist, there was the tedious work of lugging at least 2 big bags of heavy stuff home. Nothing like the nice, neat package that came delivered today.
4. Lots of redundant money waster. Most of the time, they were books like music book and art book. Next, drawing blocks and exercise books in bulk. I remember having to buy 10 of each type!! At the end of the year, I would still have fresh new ones at home. Not just a waste of money but those books added to the load I had to lug home.
5. Besides the heavy load and bulk of the books in 2 huge plastic bags (double bagged to prevent the bags from breaking), the drawing blocks add to the bulk due to the odd size, AND the rolls of plastic wrap made lugging cumbersome.
6. Gotta wrap books using the plastic wrap that came in rolls and you had to cut to size and fold properly. Richard hated this. I must say being a girl, I was quite good at it.
These Days
1. Can pre-order or order online. So convenient. Don't have to fight the crowd. Don't have to bring large amount of cash.
2. Books get delivered and you get everything on the booklist. Well, at least, Dominic's booklist has nothing out of stock. Don't have to lug heavy bags home. Everything came packed nicely in a parcel so the books don't get damaged along the way. Wonderful!
3. Plastic book covers are included and they come pre-packed, in the right size and quantity for all the books in the booklist. Don't have to buy the roll of plastic sheet. Don't have to cut and fold. Even if I were to buy plastic book covers, at least now I don't have to go and dig around the book shop to match the sizes. So convenient.
4. Notwithstanding the redundant stuff, I actually like the fact that all the "accessories" are included in the booklist so everything comes at once like a complete package. I hate to have to go to the school bookshop to pick up this item and that item every now and then.
5. Unfortunately, there are still redundant stuff included in the booklist. Some things never change.
