Villians

It might be sort of an odd question, but if you think about it with any sort of real seriousness, does the world need a super-villain? Not the crap we have going on now or Dr. Evil or something like that, but I'm talking the Hitler/Mussolini/Dr Doom/Cobra Commander/Vader sort of villain.

Here in East Oakland, I see crime and people being horrible to one another pretty much every day. People suck for no reason at work. People are just random asses in retail establishments. It just seems that we've lost any sense of what's right and wrong these days. I dunno. Are we stuck in these semi-ethical doldrums that just have us stagnating on a spiritual/soul level to the point that we just are accepting of our mediocre, hum-drum lives? Is that why we love Batman and Ironman and all that?

I guess, as odd as it might sound, would the world actually benefit from a Dr Doom rising to power and reminding us what good actually is?

And while I'm no fan of George W at all, could it be possible that he, on some level, understands this and that has something to do with Afghanistan and Iraq? And don't get me wrong. I'm only talking contributing factors and the little nigglings in the back of my mind. I have no research and no proof, just musings at best.

Is the only real chance for world peace an alien invasion like the movies say? We NEED on some fundamental level something to fight so we can keep in mind right and wrong or it blurs so badly that everyone, and I do mean EVERYONE, just ends up feeling powerless and stuck in a rut?

From an ethical and philosophical point, I pray that this isn't the case, but...I thought it warrants following the logic train just a little.

Maybe that's why Heath Ledgers Joker scared the hell out of me. Sometimes, people just want to watch the world burn. And maybe, just maybe, there is some science to actually back that up because we need those not so gentle reminders as to what really separates us from the beasts.

Its also not an uncommon theory that without evil, there can be no good. I guess the Buddhist put it as "Without suffering, we have no opportunity for compassion."

Maybe the world, in a really screwed up way, just needs one of Joss Whedon's 'big bads' to remind us of something fundamental that defies words.

Or maybe I should just lay off the Valium a little. lol Who knows?
