Guess I haven't really introduced myself properly yet... how should I say this...

I'm Ryotaro Dojima, a... detective with the Inaba PD. --Inaba, Japan.

From the sound of it some of you have been looking after my daughter, Nanako? [a bit of an awkward pause, but then his voice is filled to the brim with sincere warmth:] I can't really thank you ( Read more... )

[Same feeling he got when he woke up from a particularly rowdy night at the bar only to realize Nanako had somehow gotten his futon ready for him: guilt.]

Nanako. [...he gives up trying to think of something better to say and laughs a little to himself] Good morning. [What time is it, really? Does his watch even work here?]

M-Morning! [CAN YOU HEAR THE BRIGHTNESS IN HER VOICE? yesssss, her day has just been made] Um, I'm doing laundry, but I'll come back really soon.

[OH GOD LAUNDRY IS WHAT LADIES DO BUT... crazy magic kidnapping castle mystery or not, he promised himself he'd spend more time with Nanako.]

Nanako's dad, huh? She's talked about you. She's a good kid.

Takes after her mother. [It's impossible for Dojima to talk about his daughter without a certain warmth in his voice. If asked he would never admit to it, but the fastest way to butter Dojima up was to pay his daughter compliments.]

Hmm-- trying to get a hang of how this thing works. Could I ask who's speaking?

She must be an amazing woman, then.

I'm Special Agent Seeley Booth, FBI.

[The name sounds familiar, but he doesn't really place it until the detective mentions Nanako. Alan recalls he told her he'd introduce himself...]

It's not an easy transition, but I hope yours is smooth. I'm Alan Bradley - Nanako mentioned you to me. She missed you.

[A bit of a pained exhale here... he still can't buy the idea that Nanako's been here for years.] ...about that-- and the transition, would you mind answering a few questions for me? Bradley, was it?

Sorry, I know this is supposed to be more of a "get to know the neighbors" broadcast, but... I just don't buy it. All this talk about magic castles...

[He definitely sounds like he's having a hard time putting voice to his thoughts... for one, it feels a little rude to jump right into questioning, but... well, old habits die hard. When he's not a father, he is most definitely a detective.]

I don't mind. [He's glad to pass forward the favor that others did for him.]

I'm not fond of the 'magic' explanation myself, but... It's honestly hard to describe it otherwise - you can literally wish for something and it will appear, unless it's your loss. And unfortunately, you have to find out your loss yourself. It's different for everyone.

You said you were a detective? Some others and I have been trying to figure out how the castle works, not to mention why it does what it does. The next time we get together I'd be glad to invite you along.

[There's an amount of relief, gratitude, and real respect in his voice. Dojima's a reserved man, but pay attention and he's not as hard to read as he might wish he was.]

I'd appreciate that. Not sure if there's much I can add, but... I figured if there were other people like me, there'd be something like that.

--and you say I can just wish for something, and it'll appear? [his lips tighten with skepticism, and the only sound is a heavy exhale through his nose] I'm not sure I--

There is not a list. But there are very common types.

I am glad that little Nanako has her father here with her.

Could you walk me through the common types? If it's not too much trouble.

And thank you for looking after her. May I ask who this is?

Memories, special abilities or skills, or personal objects are the most likely possibilities to suspect.

I would not say I've really looked after her... My name is Tomoe.

[He supposes he wouldn't even know it if he were missing memories... but as far as he can tell, all the important people are there. Daughter, nephew... wife. And nope, his wedding ring and watch are all still there... everything he could possibly think of at the moment that's "valuable".]

Thank you. The idea's been nagging at me, but I'm not missing anything, as far as I can tell. Not sure if that's a good sign.

Nice to meet you, Tomoe. Even if you just kept her company for a few minutes, I should still thank you. I can't imagine how lonely and scared she must have been, if she's been here as long as she says she has.
