Fourth Mind Read - Making Preparations

Aug 03, 2011 20:31

[Those in the library today will be greeted by the sight of Charles, surrounded by several stacks of books on just about every subject, from Modern Technology for Dummies, to Radio Technology and You!, and he currently has Modern Warfare: Tactics and Strategies spread open on the table before him. At the same time, however, he's got a legal pad ( Read more... )

[Wesley is a frequent library resident himself, so he will be passing by. He happens to catch a glimpse of the man's sketches.]

That looks rather interesting. Are you an inventor?

[Charles looks up from his reading, and acknowledges Wesley.]

Not exactly. This design is actually based on a device invented by a friend of mine, where I come from. It was destroyed, unfortunately, so I'm thinking of rebuilding it here, that I might make use of it to help the Peace Patrol.

I'm a member of the Peace Patrol myself. Wesley Wyndam-Pryce.

[He holds out his hand for the other gentleman to shake.]

If you're looking at building technological devices, I would recommend getting in touch with Winifred Burkle or Kaylee Frye.

It's a pleasure to meet you, Wesley. I'm not a member, myself, but I'm hoping to speak to whoever's in charge, that I might gain membership.

[He takes Wesley's hand and shakes it, sensing his connection to Fred right off.]

As a matter of fact, Fred is who I was thinking of asking for help. I met her when I arrived here, and she made mention of her area of expertise when I told her of mine. I'm a Professor of Genetics, you see, so technology isn't exactly a strong suit of mine, beyond what I've used in my research.

[If there's one thing to expect in a library, it's books. Just...not floating ones. But there's one nearby observing Charles and his books and doodles.]

How curious...

[At the voice, Charles looks up, sensing a mind nearby, but not seeing a person belonging to that mind. He looks around, somewhat confused.]

Excuse me, what's curious?

Your drawings.

[Floating a bit closer.]

[Now Charles notices the floating book. He'll raise an eyebrow, realizing the voice is coming from it, before smiling. He should have guess.]

Oh! This is just something I'm working on. It's a design originally created by a friend of mine back home, a device I'm hoping to rebuild here.

Hallo again, Charles. An excellent beginning of a strategy, you have there. ... As I'm one of the designated strategists for this little endeavour, I should like to think that that's saying something.

But I should also like to offer my services, if I may.

Hello, Five. I must admit, the credit for that strategy doesn't go entirely to me. I had a discussion a few days ago with Felix Harrowgate, a user of magic, about the subject of pooling the ability of the castle's telepaths for both offensive and defensive purposes, focusing on neutralizing Legato, and protecting our own people from his ability.

I appreciate that. We should perhaps arrange a meeting of the castle's telepaths, as Felix gathered the castle's magic-users, to get us all on the same page?

That may be an excellent idea, as well - though, at this point, I should think a meeting of all wishing to be involved in any fashion would be wise.

The more people know the most information possible, the better. We don't want anyone else getting hurt - or worse - due to a lack of knowledge.

A fair point, that. One of the ideas I had was to have the castle's telepaths enter the minds of all who'd be engaging in combat with Legato and the others, so that when Legato tries to use his ability, he'd have to expel us first, though obviously we would need their permission, first.

Very true. I've been saying the same thing, in my conversations with others about this.

I appreciate that. I know there are threats other than Legato, but just the same, we're not the only ones strategizing and planning things for what's to come.

Of course. I'm glad to see so many people working together. Back home it's usually just myself and my sisters with the occasional assist from my brother in law... and even more occasional assist from other magical beings.

Yes indeed. For as odd as the castle's population is, many seem genuinely dedicated to keeping those who can't fight for themselves safe. It's inspiring, really.

I've been able to withstand his abilities when they've been directed solely at me. I'd be more than happy to give you a hand.

You've got one on me, then. When Legato directed the brunt of his ability at me, I was knocked out for a short time. Curiously, he waited for me to awaken, and we continued to converse. I believe Legato and I have something of an uneasy camaraderie, strange as it may sound.

I appreciate your help, Eleven. I believe it's going to take the combined forces of all of us, if we hope to at least keep him restrained.

From what I've seen that seems about right. He is extremely overconfident and has quite an ego. I'd only met him the once, but it was quite a memorable occasion.

[a pause] Are you aware he's not entirely human?

Indeed. He and I are alike in that way. [He chuckles a bit.]

I am, yes. It's his left arm. It felt like it belonged to someone else, like...there was another mind present.
