Hey...it's me again. I suck at updating this thing. There, it's acknowledged, so let's move forward:
Summahtaaaaaahm...and the livin' is... hot.
This summer has gotten unbearably hot. The central fan in my apartment just cannot keep up, and I'm too cheap to use the AC every day...that budget adjustment on my september electric bill is going to be earth-shattering as it is. I am happy to announce, however, that I've yet to get any sunburns...wheee!!!
Elixir of Love
So after my previous entry, I began rehearsing for a production of Donizetti's L'elisir d'amore with UAO. We opened last friday night to a very receptive, warm audience. The experience has been fun especially because of the people involved, namely our wonderful, resourceful director Mark. He'd staged this production of Elixir twice before in Elgin and Quincy (and with most of the same principals), so bringing it here was a piece of cake. The ensemble's work was done with in a matter of a few days, and the show was tight enough for us to take a few days off...something unheard of before at UAO.
The opening was quite successful. Sarah Bitter Mezzo gave the production a
glowing review in the Post-Dispatch. I want to believe that it's not because she's on some sort of psychotropic drugs, because she's been very cruel in the past. We do our next set of performances this Friday and Saturday. Then I have a few weeks off from UAO before I go into Carmen.
John's Bachelor Party / Wedding in Canada
So, my college roommate John is getting married to his grad school sweetheart in Canada next weekend. Over the weekend, I threw him a bachelor party, which consisted of a lot of heavy drinking in St. Louis, then working through our hangovers the next day at Six Flags!!
You heard right, the wedding is in Canada since his fiancée, Hilda, has a much larger family in the Toronto area. I shall fly up there next Thursday. I am the best man...and I'm quite scared about what I'm going to say in my speech at the reception. It's not that I'm lacking for funny/embarrassing stories to tell...I just don't know how I'm going to go about it. Any suggestions??
MUNY Magic
So, I've had two wonderful experiences at the MUNY recently. Thursday night, I saw a light, breezy production of My Fair Lady from the BOX SEATS! Initially, I was going to watch it from the Free Seats, but then my fellow free-seater Megan lucks into some primo box seats from a work contact! Yay! 'Twas bloomin' loverly!
Then last night, I went with Joy to see the revue 90 Years of MUNY Magic. There were many enjoyable numbers, including some from shows that NEED to be brought back in future seasons (i.e. Carousel). I must offer one criticism: the revue could have been a little more representative of the operettas from the early period...I enjoy some Sigmund Romberg, but where was the Gilbert & Sullivan?? Oh well, that's a minor problem in an otherwise fitting tribute to the 90-year old amphitheatre in Forest Park. Happy Birthday, MUNY!
