Got back from the Free Seats at the MUNY about an hour ago. Here are some random thoughts on The Producers:
Sets -- Impressive, especially Bialystock's office (before and after Ulla tidys it up) as well as Roger Debris's townhouse. Only weak link: the front boom, which was painted in a way that really exposed how "cut-out" the booms are....if that made any sense to you, you attend the MUNY just as much as I do.
Lighting -- a little too unfocused in places, especially when it's integral to certain comedic "bits"
Sound -- could have been beefed up in general...if only to drown out some hideously rude patrons near me in the free seats!
Costumes -- va-va-va-VOOOOOOOM!
Cast -- not a weak link to speak of...but I was dismayed by some schizophrenic vocal choices by the title characters...and who decided not to cast a blond-haired-blue-eyed guy in the part of the Tenor who belts out "Springtime for Hitler"?? That's half the joke! (By the way, I have a new goal in life: to play every featured character in this show...except for Ulla...ok, Ulla too. teehee!)
Ensemble -- tight!
Orchestra -- top notch! Sometimes we all take it for granted that the MUNY is one of the few professional musical-theatre companies around that supports and allows for such a big, full orchestra...so let's be glad for it!
Overall: YAY to the MUNY for opening its 90th Season with such a great love-letter to the Great White Way!
Ok, that's all folks. Good night!
