I hate how I never noticed things are sharpened too much until someone points it out. Such a huge problem! I'll make sure to pay attention to that from now on.
Can you tell me what you mean by bland? I'll be honest and say that's really not a good word to describe an icon by. Do you mean it should be saturated more?
I think you've got a good handle on cropping but all of these look very washed out. I think adding a lot more contrast with a brightness/contrast layer or a curves layer will help a lot. Also I think it wouldn't hurt to take more control of the colors in your icons with selective coloring. Don't be afraid to experiment and try crazy things!
Noted! I'll play around in GIMP next time I get some free time.
Would you believe I only RECENTLY discovered the selective coloring tool in GIMP? I've been using select/transparent paintbrush before. I felt like a dumbass.
Okay I really like some of the crops you've got going on. Although I think one two and eight need a lot more contrast and four five and six are over sharpened. But you also seem to know how to do good manga colorings and that seems to be kind of a rare skill lately.
Even though you're saying you're in a rut I still see a whole lot of creativity and good things going on here. I think all of them could use a little more contrast, but that might just be me because I'm the contrast queen. Although I think one definitely needs some more contrast, it's way too washed out. I also think your subject is too hard to make out in the second icon, but you get so much bonus points there for trying to do something creative with it

I love your icons in general, but sometimes it's a little difficult to tell just what's going on in some of them. This is especially true in 5 and 9. 2 a little bit as well.
ration @ n23_road Beards nonwithstanding, I haven't updated in a little while. I've been in a bit of a rut as far as ideas and the ability to work colours go.
I think all of your icons but 3 and 5 look a bit washed out, and the shading/coloring on 5 looks very unnatural. 4 looks a bit on the blurry side too, but if it's from a music video screencap (which it looks like it is?) then I can't blame you at all, since those are generally hard to deal with. As for colors, I would suggest avoiding the red+green combo in 8. It's just not all that pleasing to the eyes.

Ah well. I like how you managed to really bring out the color in these examples.
