A/N: If the Outer Zone had a TV show called ‘OZ’s Funniest Home Videos’, this would be a clip on the show. This was also inspired by this
pic of Billy during rehearsal for ‘Endgame’.
“Okay, Garrett, this is called a ‘stick’. It has mesh netting to make a cup,” Reese instructed, pointing to the netting. “This is where you catch the ball. We’ll work on that first, okay?”
Garrett nodded. “Okay, grandpa.”
Reese patted his grandson’s head. “First things first, you need to grip the shaft of the stick like this.” Garrett mimicked his grandfather’s hand position. “That’s a good lad. Okay, now, stand right there and I’m going to toss the ball to you.”
Garrett stood; legs apart with his knees slightly bent like his grandfather taught him. His eyes showed the depth of his concentration.
Travis was busy checking on the pig roasting in the pit while Isabelle, pregnant with her second child, and Chalee, Reese’s wife, prepared some drinks for the men. Travis’ sister, Sierra and her husband, Cory, were on their way for the monthly family get-together.
“Remember, keep your eye on the ball,” Reese said just before he lobbed it in the air. Travis turned to watch his son.
Garrett watched the ball fall into the net of the stick. He jumped up and down waving his hand and the stick in the air. Reese cheered and Travis smiled at his son’s triumph.
Reese bent down and picked up his own stick. “Okay, now in kaskana you can’t touch the ball with your hands so you need to toss it back to me using your stick.” Reese positioned himself and waited for Garrett.
Garrett looked at the ball in the cup, looked at his grandfather, pulled the stick behind him, gave the ball another glance, stuck his tongue out, and tossed the ball right to his grandfather’s…groin.
Reese dropped the stick, cupped his groin and slowly collapsed on the ground. Travis snorted. Garrett forced a smile, showing his teeth.
“Hey, pop, does that mean the lesson's over?” Travis asked, being a smartass.
Reese glared at him. “You teach him.” Reese rolled over onto his back and pulled his knees up.
