Thomas Slate
First Appearance:
Tin Man: Pirates of the Nonestic: Chapter Nineteen.
Thomas Slate was born under the docks, the son of an alcoholic prostitute and an unknown father. In her more lucid moments, his mother would complain that Slate belonged in the Steward's Big House acknowledged by his father. He couldn't find any resemblance between himself and Bornite Granite, so he figured his father must have at least fooled his mother into thinking he was of a higher class than her.
He made friends with Malachite Granite after he rescued the boy from the dockside bullies the Steward's son had ran afoul of while slumming. Malachite--desperate for companions his own age who knew how to have fun--dragged Slate into a world he had only dreamed about. And he soon discovered that most of the people in that class didn't earn the right to be there.
Slate learned how to hide his contempt. Malachite shared everything in his life without a second thought. When Slate's mother died, Malachite made his father move Slate into the Big House. Slate only accepted the charity until he was old enough to join the Island Navy. Steward Granite made sure he would have an officer's career. It was the least he could do for a boy with so much promise who his son had latched onto.
Slate excelled in the Navy and worked his way up the ranks to become its youngest Commandant at twenty-three-annuals-old. Malachite continued to pal around with pirates and not taking any responsibility. the Archipelago deserved better leadership.
Thomas Slate is an original character for Pirates of the Nonestic portrayed by John Hensley.
