Last night was the The Go! Team show at Bimbo's. Diego, Christa, and I got to the venue relatively early (about 45 minutes before the doors opened, after I found my way to the venue surprisingly well considering I hadn't been to Bimbo's in a long time and had forgotten to get directions) and we sat and waited outside. I had wanted Jayme and Bryan to go to the show with us, but they ran out of tickets online. To my dismay, I found out that they still had tickets available at the door, so they would have been able to come.
We sat at a table and ordered something to eat (for those unfamiliar with Bimbo's, it's an old nightclub from the 30s, and the back part of the venue has tables where you can order food and drinks). I got a turkey panini sandwich, and Diego attempted to order some pizza without cheese, but they wound up just scraping the cheese off, so he couldn't eat it.
We were dead center front row for the show.
Tussle opened, and surprised us by being really good (well, not that we thought they would be bad, but we liked their set a lot more than we expected we would. I even bought their CD). There are four members of the groups, two of which drum, one who plays bass (and some drums/percussion, too), and the last who kinda plays the keyboard/synth/makes weird noises for the songs. I was able to sneak one picture during their set, but for nearly their entire show they had all the lights off (except for a little spinning red police light), so you can't really see them well.
The Go! Team was phenomenal. The singer (whose name is -- or she at least goes by -- Ninja?) had a ton of energy. They opened with Panther Dash, followed by Get It Together. The next song was new, called We Will Never Be Defeated, and it was followed by The Ice Storm, which is a secret track on the Japanese version of their album (she said that this was the first time they played it though, so we got an 'exclusive'). The next song was supposed to be Everyone's a VIP to Someone, but the bass broke during the previous song ... so while they were fixing it, one of the drummers came down and sung a solo song with "Yr Terror" in the title (I can't remember the full name of the song), which is apparently another secret track on the Japanese album. They fixed the bass, and played Everyone's a VIP to Someone, followed by The Power is On, which was amazing live. Next came one of my two favourite songs, Huddle Formation, followed by Junior Kickstart, and then my other favourite song, Bottle Rocket. They ended their set with Ladyflash. They came back for their encore and played one more song, which is currently Untitled.
There was a ton of energy during the show. Ninja was very into the crowd and kept everyone really hyped up. During Bottle Rocket she insisted that everyone must dance, and then said, "If I like how you're dancing, I'm going to copy you!" (in her cute British accent). She started picking people out of the crowd and dancing like them, and she copied both Diego and Christa, as we were directly in front of her. It was really funny, and a lot of fun. Several of the songs that don't have lyrics on the album had lyrics during the show. The album may be great, but it was hundreds of times better live.
Sadly, I wasn't able to take a lot of pictures during the set. In fact, I only got pictures during the last three songs, and got a few short video clips. Bimbo's is pretty strict about their 'no camera' policy, and me being tall, I stood out while I was standing in front of the stage -- in perfect view of the security guard to my right. Hell, they made me check my iPod in at the coat check when I entered the venue, apparently in fear that I would be recording the show? I've never had to do that. I'm glad my camera is small. Eventually I found a way to sneak some pictures, so I do have a few to share. I also got some video of Ninja dancing, which is pretty fun.
I was really disappointed to go to the merch booth to find that they'd sold out of almost all of the shirts for both Tussle and The Go! Team. I'll have to see about ordering one online (and hope that they'll ship shirts from the UK). Apparently the shirts sold out really fast.
