kubis Interrogations [Castle, Rick, Alexis, Kate, PG, 661 words, for
summerstorm, prompt: how does Alexis *really* feel about her father's books? Ameripick by
penknife. A minor spoiler for the first chapter of Naked Heat.]
Interrogations down at the precinct are exciting. Especially when he gets to join in on them and actually ask some of the questions. Grill the bad guys.
They're even fun sometimes when it's Beckett interrogating him: Rick can learn a lot about what a woman wants from the questions she asks him. So when she asks him about his date the previous night - with one of New York's top ten most eligible women, no less - it's obvious that what Beckett wants is him.
Or so he tells himself. He's still not far enough back into Esposito and Ryan's good books to actually risk doing anything about it, upsetting the delicate balance they've got working for them. For now, he's gonna stick with riding along, being a good partner. A friend.
But it's still good to know Beckett gets jealous when he dates beautiful women.
Interrogations at home aren't so much fun.
He doesn't get them from his mother. She just takes one look at him, says something like oh, Rick, will you never learn?, shakes her head and heads off out. He's used to that.
Interrogations from Alexis are the problem. She has a dangerous technique. Sneaky. They'll be sitting at the breakfast bar, and the conversation will be an innocent discussion of their plans for the weekend, when Alexis will pick up a carrot stick, munch on it, and ask if he's ever had sex in the kitchen. "Because I think it would be really unhygienic," she says, her mouth down-turned in a moue of distaste.
"I, um-" Rick starts, then gets a hold of himself. "Where on earth did you get that idea?"
"Chapter one of Naked Heat," she says. "I mean, I know the case isn't real, but the characters are, aren't they? Based on you and Detective Beckett and Detectives Ryan and Esposito and all the others."
"Well, yes," Rick admits, trying to remember what exactly is in chapter one. He remembers the big picture of all his novels, but not all the little details. Something about Nikki Heat and Jameson Rook, obviously. Oh, yeah, Nikki's remembering making love in his kitchen. That one was definitely wishful thinking on Rick's part.
"Only, with the apartment being open plan, it would be really awkward if Grams or I walked in on you," Alexis says. "It isn't as though you can really put a sock on the front door."
Rick chokes on his coffee. "Sweetheart, I promise you, that will never happen. No sex in the kitchen. Ever." Later he's going to have to do some interrogation of his own, because Alexis definitely shouldn't be thinking about putting socks on doors. Or needing to put socks on doors. Not for years yet. Many, many years.
"Good," she says, nodding, "because I think that would scar me for life."
"You and me both," Rick says, heartfelt.
"And Dad?"
"Yes?" Rick asks, trying not to sound as apprehensive as he feels. One sex question per day from his teenage daughter is as much as his mental health can take.
"You are careful, aren't you?" she asks, and for a horrible moment he thinks he's going to have the safe sex conversation with his teenage daughter. The wrong way around. "When you're riding along on cases," she adds, and Rick lets out the breath he didn't know he was holding.
"Of course I am," he promises her.
"I know you love it, being in the thick of things, but I'd hate for anything to happen to you." Most of the time Alexis acts twice her age, but right now, she sounds exactly like a scared little girl.
Rick can handle that.
He puts his coffee down, leans over and hugs her tight. "I'll always be here for you," he tells her.
"Thanks, Dad," she says, her voice muffled in his shoulder, and he thinks he'd take any number of interrogations from her if he can always keep her safe like this.
