Supernatural 4x03 - In the Beginning
I really, really want to sit down and write a million things about this episode and how COMPLETELY AND UTTERLY AWESOME it was, but I'm too stuck on OMG WOW, and OH, DEAN and OH, MARY!!!
I'M PRACTICALLY SPEECHLESS WITH GLEE AT THE CONTINUITY HERE. The opening recap, seeing Mary apologise to Sam in Home, now it all makes sense! What she did to him, to save John's life. And we've got another big piece of Azazel's plan. And how much do I love that he's still important, even now he's been killed, that the moment in the pilot, Mary's death and the demon leaning over little Sam in his cradle, that's still the focal point of the show.
Castiel is a sneaky little bastard. And has no sense of personal space - I like that! *g* And angels are not omniscient (I misunderstood it at first to be God who isn't omniscient, but if the 'we' are the angels, it makes so much more sense and ties in with the Bible and Jesus words when he said 'only the father knows'). So it looks like Lazarus Rising might be our only deus ex machina, seeing as the purpose of this was only to let Dean in on all the details, not to actually change matters - good.
So fate/destiny cannot be altered. No matter what anyone does, their fate is fixed? I find myself hoping that's a lie - can angels outright lie, or just dissemble (Castiel said "You have to stop it," implying Dean could do so, but not exactly saying he could)? - because it's a concept I loathe, that we're not in control of our own future. Why bother, with anything, if that's the case. Just sit back and let destiny happen. And yet, crazily, that moment didn't make me love the episode any less. ETA: Aha, it's the past that can't be changed, that's fated to be, not the future. That makes so much more sense - thanks, slodwick!
Mitch Pileggi was fantastic - little mannerisms, subtle things, were just so Dean. Gah, at first it was so fantastic Dean getting to see his family (Watching Mary, and wanting to tell Sam how hot she was - "I'm going to hell. Again!" ♥) but then having to be there while it all fell apart, watching them murdered and unable to do a thing, knowing the future. Oh, show, you sure can pack an emotional punch. As for Mary telling Dean her hopes for her children, that the worst thing she could imagine was them growing up as hunters, and Dean's held-back tears... I might have got some dust in my eye just then.
John so innocent and sweet! Josses a lot of fanfic, but makes it even harsher that he evolved into the hunter he did.
Samuel and Deanna!! Dean's reaction! ♥ And Campbell - we finally have a maiden name for Mary.
To be continued - intriguing!! I haven't even seen the preview for next week, so please, don't tell me anything - I just want to speculate to myself!
I cannot believe I loved an episode so much when Sam was barely in it! Admission time - I was so enthralled, I barely missed him. *shame face* Sam, I love you!
