Who: Mielwynn, Gordon Ransom, Gabriel Grey
When: January 22nd, 12:00 pm
Where: Inn of the Golden Suns
What: Plotting
The missive she had sent to Gabriel Grey had been simple enough.
Dearest Brother,
I know our dealings have been few and far between. However, I find myself in a bit of inconvenient trouble. I doubt father would be very happy, but is in no position to help. I find I need to speak with you immediately at the Inn of the Golden Sons. I will be there with a Ransom for our family’s good name. Just enough to take care of this matter before it grows too much to handle.
Your loving sister,
Ruby Freea
By Ozma’s tits an idiot with any real knowledge of Zero’s inner circle should be able to figure it out while it looked harmless enough.
She’s found Ransom at the most upscale of the Realm of the Unwanted’s whorehouses. That wasn’t really saying much.
She had not been suicidal. Even though she was bound by owing Zero a life for a life, she could hardly do that dead. She’d teleported as soon as the shooting started. To the Dark Tower, ironically enough. Then to find any of Zero’s men still breathing.
She figured, correctly, that Zero himself would be too valuable a figurehead to kill right there. He’d have a ‘fair’ trial and a very public execution to appease the masses who needed some feeling of having retribution.
After half a day she checked back at the mess that had been left at the ‘safe’ house. Some of the corpses looked as if they had been torn apart. She hadn’t expected such a mess from those sent to rescue the princesses and former Mrs., Goodman. Not to mention their denying her of her own plaything.
She’d found Zero’s fingers in a hall, as well as bloodstains on the wall she was able to magically determine to be his. But no body. She felt about for residual human magic and determined how Zero had been taken from this place. There was no sign of Dawson’s body about. That was interesting.
Mielwynn explained her plan to Ransom. She dare not use much in the way of magic around the palace. After the kidnapping they had to be setting up sensing crystals for such a thing. But if Zero’s inside man was still in place, she could get them in, unrecognized, and get Zero out, spending only one night in the castle.
Mielwynn seeded memories of old, blind Agnes who lived with her grandson in the village of Lakeview. That magic, done far from the palace, was small enough to go undetected, as it would settle in the minds of those fools and leave no lingering trace. They didn’t know Agnes well, but she had a habit of getting lost if her grandson was busy. Tapping her cane blindly down the streets. Her memory not always in the here and now, often lost in the past.
Then she had seeded the magical fungus that caused Buraches Disease in the wheat of the village. Wheat was its biggest export as it was a farming community. In days people had begun to fall sick. Word spread. And while a few infants and oldsters died, the very ill were sure to be taken to Glinda Memorial in Central City. Four days away. Finaqua, with its well supplied infirmaries was at the half way point. The monarchy would have to offer aid to help their people on their way.
With makeup, a dirtying of her hair to grey instead of white, and a bandage over her old, blind eyes, loose peasant cloths, a stoop…. She would pass unnoticed as another victim of the illness, being tended by her devoted grandson, also in peasant clothing and his hair temporarily died brown.
But they needed Gabriel Grey to know where Zero’s prison was being kept. Which was why they waited in this halfway decent tavern, drinking passable ale. This far away from the castle Miel used magic to make herself look like a feminine version of what she could recall of Grey from seeing him only briefly the night of the kidnappings. Ransom was undisguised, though not in uniform. Grey had to recognize him.
All they could do now was wait and hope Grey had a brain in his head.
