Alfred remembers frowns-frowning skies, frowning people.

It had been drizzling earlier that day, and the grass was sweetly wet, smelling strongly as the air slowly warmed. He loved the feel of the wet blades tickling his feet, the cool drops of water sticking to his skin and becoming heavy and dripping down again.

But nobody else was smiling. Nobody else wandered through the cool grass, feeling the fallen rain against their skin; Alfred remembers, with humor, doubting that he would like these people very much, these people who didn’t smile.

The boy was sitting alone, isolated from the others, on a damp rock, with a book balanced on his knees which he read intently, his little mouth forming the words. Alfred wandered over, excited at the pull he once more felt-these people spoke his language! They were like England! Even if they didn’t smile, they were better than Nassau, who frightened him and was rough with him.

The boy took no immediate notice of Alfred, and he silently, inconspicuously observed him. This boy, who seemed younger than the other two, had pale skin and wavy, light brown hair that fell around his ears. His eyes were a clear, unclouded blue, like an autumn sky, and flicked quickly from side to side as they scanned the pages in the book he held.

Alfred became curious about what this book was that held the boy’s attention so raptly. He wondered with excitement if it was a fairy tale, like the ones England had read to him once or twice before, with beautiful creatures who spun the world with their magic. He scooted closer without any conscious thought to do so, and the boy’s eyes flicked up to him, holding him with the same intensity as he had held the pages before him. Alfred tried not to falter.

“Do not interrupt me, if you please,” the boy said briskly, and went back to his reading. Alfred was taken aback, and blinked owlishly at the boy, who studiously ignored him. But he could not be deterred, and he only moved closer again.

“What are you readin’?” Alfred asked quietly, innocently, his curiosity overcoming the knowledge that he probably should not interrupt the boy again, since he’d said not to.

The boy looked up again, with some irritation, but Alfred could clearly see the recognition in the boy’s eyes as they locked on to his, and he knew he had that to thank for preventing any angry reaction to Alfred’s bothering him.

“The Bible,” the boy said smartly, in a way that implied Alfred was stupid for not knowing that. But Alfred only leaned forward, trying to look at the pages.

“I don’t know that stowy,” he said innocently, and the boy seemed to be holding himself back from pushing Alfred away. “Engwand said I will read it when I’m big.”

The boy huffed, but turned the book, to allow Alfred to peer in. “It’s Sabbath,” he said, moving slightly closer to Alfred with a smart look. “Everyone has to read Bible on Sabbath.”

“Sadbath,” Alfred repeated, looking into the book with wonder, even though he did not comprehend the words on the page. “Can you read these?” Alfred asked, putting a finger on the page, to indicate the words. The boy huffed again, and pushed Alfred’s hand away, suddenly protective of the book.

“No,” he said shortly, grudgingly. “But I’m going to learn. I will learn it all, by heart, even.”

Alfred just looked at him with wonder and admiration, pulling at the boy’s arm to try to glance the pages of the book again. “Me too, me too!” he chanted, and the boy carefully lowered it to Alfred’s level, deliberately keeping it out of his reach.

“Wha’s your name?” Alfred asked then, looking up at the boy.

“Massachusetts,” the boy said, puffing up a little as his mouth formed easily around the long name.

“Massa… Massa…” Alfred repeated, puzzling at the strange word that sounded more like the language of the dark people from the forest than England’s language.

“Massachusetts,” the boy repeated, moving his hand on the syllables, to help Alfred.

“Massa… Massachusetts,” Alfred finally forced out, and grinned widely, proud that he could pronounce the name too. “I’m America,” he said, bouncing a little in anticipation, waiting for the boy to pronounce his name too.

“America,” the boy repeated, and for the first time, the boy smiled, and Alfred thought he was prettier when he smiled. “You are America,” the boy said again.

“America!” Alfred said, scrambling up onto the rock next to the boy, and suddenly the book is forgotten as they smile and giggle together.

Frowns, Alfred remembers. Frowns morphing and twisting and becoming beautiful smiles.

Whoo! Written in an hour flat! *pats self on the back* (For sakuratsukikage. Hope you feel better soon, dear~! <3)
- The first permanent colony in Massachusetts territory was the Massachusetts Bay Colony, founded by English Puritans.
- Masachusetts' human name is John. Predictably.
I spologize for any inaccuracies, especially in the religion parts. Please correct me if I made mistakes, I'm not religious and don't want to offend anybody. ^^; I hope I did my native state justice! *cuddles him*
