I really loved the way you described and characterized Massachusetts here. Protecting the book from this DIRTY KID and all that. And how stuck up he is, but how he warms to Alfred in the end.

“America!” Alfred said, scrambling up onto the rock next to the boy, and suddenly the book is forgotten as they smile and giggle together.

Frowns, Alfred remembers. Frowns morphing and twisting and becoming beautiful smiles.

Massachusetts is really a little brat, in a way. He definitely has a better-than-you air to him, and Alfred's so unassuming and openly friendly, I think he caught John a little off guard. XD
