I got this as a Christmas gift and have just finished the last of the 4 movies in the box set. It’s a Criterion Collection compilation, which was a purchase motivated by seeing “Samurai Rebellion” at the Detroit Institute of the Arts Theatre a while back.
These movies are “classics” for various reasons, and I’m not going to pontificate about something I don’t have any background in. You can read the reviews in various places, I’m sure. I enjoyed every single one of these films, for various reasons. There’s different pacing in each one, with Samurai Rebellion as the slowest but most tense overall. Kill was probably the most active, but included a lot of comedy with the violence. Great acting, good storytelling (even with the multiple twists and scores of characters!).
In no particular order:
Kill,
Samurai Spy,
Sword of the Beast,
Samurai Rebellion.
If you’ve got any interest at all in Samurai films, these are fun. The more I’ve explored Asian cinema like this, the more I begin to understand the little quirks and influences from things like Kill Bill. These have been happily added to my DVD collection.
