As it turns out, this is a thing we share...I'm watching the Musashi series (Samurai I, II and III with Toshiro Mifune) right now! Have you seen any of the old Zatoichi series starring Shintaro Katsu? If you digs this sort of filmmaking, check 'em out , I think you'll dig 'em. I can give you some recommendations if you'd like.
We'll have something to watch when you two make it here. ;)

anyway, fun times all around. although that said, I'll admit to falling asleep during many of the old "masterpieces." I'll admit it's a shortcoming on my part, but I often find the old-old ones severely problematic in terms of pacing. there are some great moments, though ^_^
I think I'd take a B-rate (okay, like Y-rate...) goofy kung fu classic over one of the epic black and white samurai flicks. also, I find that being well liquored also adds to the experience for me ^_^
