I got this as a Christmas gift and have just finished the last of the 4 movies in the box set. It’s a Criterion Collection compilation, which was a purchase motivated by seeing “Samurai Rebellion” at the Detroit Institute of the Arts Theatre a while back

As it turns out, this is a thing we share...I'm watching the Musashi series (Samurai I, II and III with Toshiro Mifune) right now! Have you seen any of the old Zatoichi series starring Shintaro Katsu? If you digs this sort of filmmaking, check 'em out , I think you'll dig 'em. I can give you some recommendations if you'd like.

films about BLIND SWORDSMEN? hell yeah, this stuff is canonical bad ass <3 that said, I thought that the Kitano Takeshi remake was a little too goofy... it would have been fine without all the blood being CG. I mean, come on -- people have been doing the stage blood thing forever. it has a charm to it. I can't *imagine* that CG blood is cheaper or more efficient...

anyway, fun times all around. although that said, I'll admit to falling asleep during many of the old "masterpieces." I'll admit it's a shortcoming on my part, but I often find the old-old ones severely problematic in terms of pacing. there are some great moments, though ^_^

I think I'd take a B-rate (okay, like Y-rate...) goofy kung fu classic over one of the epic black and white samurai flicks. also, I find that being well liquored also adds to the experience for me ^_^

I have to say that there are simply times when a samurai-classic will NOT do. In those instances, reaching for the rape-mantis is the way to go. Or perhaps Gay Mei. :D
