“Hate us ‘cause we’re beautiful
But we don’t like you either
We’re cheerleaders
We are cheerleaders!”

The team jumped up and down, smacking their pom-poms together. Just another day of cheerleading practice for Krystal Jung, captain of the cheerleading squad.
“Take five, everyone.” She said, reaching for her water bottle.
The group dispersed, some leaving to the bathroom, others formed groups and started chatting. Krystal merely stood there, watching the boys practice soccer on the field across from her.

“Jonghyun’s pretty hot, huh?” Sulli commented, now standing next to her.
Krystal shrugged. “He’s okay.” She had her eye on someone else though; the smallest, newest member of the soccer team. The one with the chicken legs and bright blonde hair. The one that was now calling her name and waving frantically in her direction.

“Krystal! Krystal! Hey!” The boy jumped up and down, trying to get her attention.
Krystal rolled her eyes and turned away.

“Okay girls, break’s over! Back in formation!” But just before she got in position, she looked over her shoulder. Yep, the boy was still looking at her. She smirked at him and quickly got back to her duties.

“Krystal Jung? The hottest girl in school? That’s who you’re going for? Good luck with that, man.” Some random soccer player patted Amber’s shoulder.

Amber smiled though, she knew what that smirk meant. If only they knew. Of course, they couldn’t, no one could. Everyone thought she was a boy named Jo (which was actually short for Josephine, another thing they would never know). Only Krystal knew who she really was. This was her and Krystal’s secret and she knew if she told anyone, Krystal would end it. Just like that. Krystal got off on keeping it from everyone anyway, and Amber sort of liked that.

“Alright boys! Less talking, more sprinting! Gotta work on that stamina!” The coach yelled out and Amber promptly took her attention off the group of cheerleaders and back to the soccer ball in front of her. Knowing what was waiting for her later gave her a sudden rush of excitement and energy. The quicker she finished the drills, the faster she could leave.

Krystal had waited in the locker room till the other girls cleared out; she then took a shower, taking much longer than necessary. She needed to buy as much time as she could.

Just as she had finished and began to carefully dress, she heard someone coming in. She was just about to slide her t-shirt on when a pair of arms wrapped around her bare waist. She smiled and then swiftly pulled the arms off her.

“You’re late.” She said, glaring at the older girl.
“Sorry, I got caught up. “ Amber was taken aback; she was less than 5 minutes late. Krystal usually didn’t mind.
“And you’re not even supposed to be in here. This is the girl’s locker room.” Krystal said, that playful smirk now on her face. This is when Amber realized the younger girl was teasing her. She played long.
“Technically, I am a girl.” Amber’s arms found their way around Krystal’s waist again, pulling her close.
Krystal giggled. “But they don’t know that.”
“And that’s how you like it, right?”
Krystal nodded, planting a quick kiss on Amber’s lips. “It’s the only way to be sure that you’re all mine and no one else’s.”
“I wouldn’t want to be anyone else’s.” Amber answered, grinning that goofy grin of hers.
Krystal made a disgusted noise.
“Gross, enough corniness. Now shut up and let’s make out.”

”You’re gonna make it, I can tell. Out of the two of us, it’ll be you. That voice and that face…yeah, you’ll make it.”
But what did he even mean by “that face?” Taeyeon wondered for the twelfth time that night. He hadn’t even looked at her when he said it; he sort of stared off at the city below them, a smug smile on his face. Taeyeon wasn’t sure if he meant it, even knowing Kyuhyun as well as she did; it was hard to tell when he wasn’t being sarcastic.
Taeyeon tossed and turned, his words replaying in her mind. She couldn’t sleep. Did he think she was pretty? Is that what he meant? Did he even mean it at all? These same thoughts swirled around her mind over and over again. She had feelings for Kyuhyun, though no one else knew, hell, she even had trouble admitting it to herself. They had been friends for as long as she could remember and she was sure he thought of her as a little sister (or even a little brother sometimes). He complimented her voice all the time, which was nothing. They both sang, they sang together all the time. On the hill overlooking the city, Kyuhyun with his harmonica and Taeyeon with just her voice, they’d break out into impromptu blues sessions which usually had them in stitches by the end of it. Actually, it was just at the end of one of their random duets when he said it. At the time, Taeyeon just laughed it off but now, there was nothing else she could think about. And why did it matter so much if he thought she was pretty? It didn’t mean he liked her…right?
Taeyeon sighed; sleep was already a lost cause. It was late but she didn’t care anymore. She jumped out of bed, snatched her mp3 player off her dresser and left the house.
~o~
Her destination was that hill overlooking the city and as she made the last few steps up there she realized she wasn’t alone. Kyuhyun sat on that big rock he always sat on, a soft tune coming from his harmonica.
“Yah, what are you doing out here?” Taeyeon said, trying to sound casual and nonchalant.
“What are YOU doing out here this late? Shouldn’t kids like you be in bed?” Kyuhyun countered, seemingly unsurprised at her presence.
“We’re practically the same age, if I’m a kid, then you’re one too.”
“Nah, because I don’t look like one.”
Taeyeon rolled her eyes, his teasing was always the same, Taeyeon didn’t have the energy to keep at it tonight.

It grew quiet after that, the two sitting a few feet apart, staring at the glimmering city lights below them. Suddenly, Kyuhyun started playing that ever familiar blues tune on his harmonica. He played a few notes and then started to sing.

“My mamma said now Kyu, go to bed,
But I said, mamma no, I ain’t a kid no more, I don’t have to go to bed.
Then mamma said now boy you’re a kid as long as you live under this roof.
And that’s when I realized I got the “I’m-not-a-kid-no-more” blues.”

He finished with a few more notes on the harmonica, but it was mostly drowned out by Taeyeon’s laughter.
“That was horrible.” Taeyeon said, once she had stopped laughing.
“I try…I try.” Kyuhyun shrugged, grinning. “Hey, your turn.” He played the same notes again; Taeyeon counted the beats in her head and then started to sing.

“Now see, there’s this guy I know,
Wait, no, there’s this kid I know.
He says to me, now Tae, you’re just a kid you know?
But I say I’m just as young as you are.
He says no, it’s not about age, it’s about looks.
And that’s when I knew I had the “I’m-forever-twelve” blues.”

Kyuhyun finished with a nice little solo and then shook his head. “That was worse than mine.”
“I try…I try.” Taeyeon echoed his words, smiling.
Kyuhyun sighed. “Your voice though. Really, Taeyeon, it’s something else. You’ve got everything you need to be something, you know? Not me, I can sing, yeah but that’s it. You? You’ve got it all.” He then went back to his harmonica, that same soft tune from before playing.
Taeyeon didn’t know how to respond, and all his words did was remind her of what he had said earlier.

“Kyuhyun…”
He looked up at her from his harmonica.
“Before…” It was hard for Taeyeon to say this; she could never say what she really felt. But she had to do this; she had to get this off her mind. “When you said I had ‘that voice and that face’ what did you mean?”
“I meant exactly what I said.”
“But I thought I looked like a kid.”
Kyuhyun laughed. “But you’re beautiful.” He blurted it out, and his expression told Taeyeon he hadn’t meant to say that out loud.
Taeyeon tried to hold back a smile but failed. So that was what he meant.
If it were daylight out, Taeyeon would’ve looked at Kyuhyun now and seen his face turn a faint shade of red but now all she saw when she looked at him was an embarrassed smile.
“You’re not half-bad yourself.” Taeyeon answered, sneaking a glance at him.
“Yeah?”
“Yeah. You and me, we’ll make it someday. With our voices and our faces…yup, we’ll definitely make it.”
