Careful. That’s what they were around each other, careful.
Their touches always lingered yet they were careful not to touch too much, lest one girl realize what that touch actually meant. Neither girl knew when it first started or how it got like this. Probably when one first discovered her feelings for the other, still there was no way to be sure.
Conscious. That’s how they felt about each other, always extremely conscious of each other’s presence.
When one girl was talking, the gaze of the other was sure to be on her. They would be standing several feet apart and five people could be standing between them yet they always seemed to catch and keep each other’s gaze. There’s the saying “If looks could kill…” and if this were possible, their stares would have murdered them both already.
Blurring the lines of friendship, tip-toeing around it yet never quite crossing it. More than friends, not quite lovers.
Then there were the smiles. One would hear a joke and laugh at it; the other would be completely unaware. Yet at the sight of the younger girl laughing, the eldest was sure to break out in a smile of her own, every single time.

“Taeyeon…quick, let’s go, before they wake up and notice we’re gone.” Tiffany whispered at Taeyeon’s bedside, careful not to wake up her sleeping roommate.
Taeyeon squinted at her in the dark, it was hard to see but she could still make out the excitement in Tiffany’s eyes.
The girls ran, they took a cab, they wore masks, and they covered their faces. This was their tiny moment of freedom and they weren’t going to let anything stop them.
They arrived at their destination, a lonely park bench on the side of a deserted road where you could just barely make out the city lights. They could’ve gone anywhere but they came here. All they wanted was some time to talk to each other, to catch up, to laugh.
They talked for hours, and if you had asked Taeyeon what they talked about she would say she didn’t know. If you asked Tiffany what she said that made Taeyeon laugh so hard, she couldn’t remember. All Tiffany could pay attention to was the sound of Taeyeon’s laugh. Loud, boisterous, carefree. All Taeyeon could pay attention to was the sound of Tiffany’s voice. Husky, smooth, happy.
As the hours passed, the conversation died down but both girls were content, their fingers interlocked, one head resting on the other’s shoulder. The lines of friendship were becoming harder and harder to see.
“Taeyeon…what are we?” Tiffany asked, not sure if she really wanted an answer to that question.
“Best friends…” Taeyeon looked down at their interlocked fingers; Tiffany’s thumb absent-mindedly caressing the back of Taeyeon’s hand. “Right?” Taeyeon finished.
“Really?” Tiffany asked, lifting her head from Taeyeon’s shoulder and turning to look at her.
“I…don’t know.” Taeyeon answered, trying to avoid her gaze. She was afraid of what might happen if she turned to look at her.
Tiffany didn’t back down, she stared at the side of Taeyeon’s face, taking in every detail of it. Her sharp jawline, the slope of her nose, that mole on her cheek, her soft bottom lip.
“Taeyeon…” Tiffany whispered and despite herself, Taeyeon turned.
Tiffany leaned in, the lines of friendship being erased the closer she got to Taeyeon. Her lips met Taeyeon’s. The lines were gone, erased completely.
They would think about the consequences of this later, but for now, they would enjoy this. The kiss was not passionate nor was it long but it was right. It was perfect. It was what both of them wanted but would never admit to each other or even themselves.
Tiffany pulled away. They stared at each other for a few seconds until Tiffany smiled and Taeyeon smiled back.
“So what are we now?” Taeyeon asked, their hands still together, playing with each other’s fingers.
“I don’t know.” Tiffany answered, but she sounded playful, happy, hopeful even. “Does it matter?”
“No.” Taeyeon grinned.
“Good.” Tiffany laughed and went in for another kiss.
