movie: Kal Ho Naa Ho

First of all, I think I may be one of the few who adore this movie and consider it a favorite. It’s not that amazing of a film-my friend and her sister liked (certainly not loved) it okay when we watched it together, and even though I’ve only seen a few other Bollywood films, I already know it isn’t Shahrukh Kahn’s best acting or the best Hindi story-but it still struck a chord in me for some reason. Perhaps I’m biased because it was my first introduction to Bollywood (Bride and Prejudice aside); maybe it’s like in Doctor Who fandom where oftentimes, your first Doctor and companion are your favorites.

But why do I love this film so much that I can enjoy it ad nauseam?

The story has elements that I appreciate in most of my favorites: it has its fair share of cheesiness, but it is a sincere and heartfelt film about love and family. It kept my full attention for three hours and I love it more and more on repeat. The heart-breaking, bittersweet ending had me sitting in my computer chair at six in the morning staring at the wall with tears streaming down my face, and I’ll admit that I was weepingteary-eyed during the “diary reading” scene and during the slightly melodramatic moment where two of the main characters are sobbing and shaking and holding each other despite one of the characters desperately denying that “I don’t love you. I don’t love anyone.” :’( And omg, SRK and Saif’s characters had me in stitches throughout the whole film-the slashy scenes especially had me giggling (but more about that in a minute). The songs and dances are catchy and cute and colorful.

I also relate with the main character Naina’s responsibility towards her family and her utter frustration with the world. What I would give to have a slightly clueless, but kind-hearted friend like Rohit and an eccentric neighbor like Aman (who is just a huge burst of energy and goodness) interfere with my life and “teach me how to smile.” …Which brings me to the shippiness. The story is a love triangle of sorts, and while each character has his/her angsty moments, it’s refreshing in that Naina, Aman, and Rohit genuinely care for each other. I’m usually a one-ship kinda girl, and on my first viewing, I really wanted Naina and Rohit together since we’re introduced to Rohit before Aman; then, as SRK grew on me (and did he ever!), I found myself rooting for both guys equally. Naina/Rohit, Naina/Aman, Rohit/Aman, Naina/Rohit/Aman…they all have great chemistry together, and I happily ship it all! :)

And seriously, the slash writes itself. ♥
