Second-last Bluesfest shift, plus various proof that I am overtired.

Jul 12, 2008 00:21

Tonight at Bluesfest was so much fun. Neiges decided to put Shawna and me on cash, which we hadn't done before, and we admittedly didn't really love the idea at first - but then it became super-funsies. SUPER-FUNSIES.

Things Learned:

  • I cannot recognize the signs of flirting from people of my own general age group (except in the case of bus stop guy the other day, but he was flirting hardcore - which isn't to say these guys weren't also doing so, but there was alcohol involved when it came to them)
  • Old men are kind of creepy (ha, okay, not a new bit of information - but seriously, "What was your name again? Leslie Thump Thump?" Yeah, that's the last time I draw a heart on my name tag)
  • People like alcohol a lot and do not like to be told that they cannot have any more alcohol - and sometimes start flirting to get their own way, and other times just look pathetic and lame and slouch away
  • Great Big Sea attracts a... great big audience. (Ohohohoho!)
  • This audience really, really likes their beer. Like, I've helped clean up every night and have never found so many empty cans on the tables!

But seriously, you guys - GREAT BIG AUDIENCE:

I myself drank a lot... of water!

Before all this, I had a terrific dinner with three of my favourite ladies in the world, namely Heather, Shawna and Kristin. And by "terrific", I mean the company. The main courses were either fish or a "pork chop" that was, in fact, ham. And I don't like fish or ham! Heather basically thought it was the best thing ever when I said to her, "Heather, have at my ham!"

No, seriously, she won't stop saying it. "HAVE AT MY HAM!"

Tomorrow night is my last Bluesfest shift - which saddens me, really. Because as tiring as it can be, it's so great, being surrounded by great people and great music all the time, and get free meals out of the deal and... anyway. It's an experience. WILL VOLUNTEER AGAIN.

Then on Sunday, I'm going to see Martha Wainwright!!! For frees!!! (Oh, for frees. I love you, for frees.)

    ---

Found myself in CD Warehouse yesterday at lunch, looking for Dirty Pretty Things' new album - which I found, of course. And, shockingly enough, Joan As Police Woman's To Survive, which, after not being able to find it at HMV, I looked for in every indie store in Ottawa to no avail. Thanks, CD Warehouse!

Then, thinking of viola players while walking back down the strip mall to my store, I turned on my heel and headed back into CD Warehouse - I listen to Final Fantasy's He Poos Clouds quite often enough to warrant buying it, I think. So I did! So upwards of $50 later, here I am. Oh, music and/or book stores, why do you do this to me?

I really like DPT's new album, I think. I wasn't sure what I'd think of it when I bought it, because I have to shamefully admit that a lot of the appeal of their first album is, for me, the blatant songs about Peter Doherty (particularly in songs like Wondering but even, ironically enough, in If You Love A Woman, with its "AND IF SHE HAS A BROTHER, OOH LA LA LA LA LAAAA")... but there are some really spectacular songs from my initial couple of listens.

As for Joan Wasser, brilliant lady! I'm not even through my first listen of her album, and I'm already ridiculously in love with it. I'm not even at the track that features Rufus! But I know it's coming, and I know it'll make me retardedly happy! And I know I'll listen to it on repeat!

And, of course, Final Fantasy. Ha. I know I love the album, that's why I bought it! I love Has A Good Home, but I think He Poos Clouds has become my favourite of the two, very likely a lot to do with that thing I read about the Dungeons & Dragons connection, because I like things with themes, particularly geeky ones. I made Mom listen to some of it when we were driving around yesterday - she put up with it well enough, but I think she was a bit iffy. And I can understand Owen Pallett being a bit jarring to those who have not yet grown to love him! BUT HE IS SPECTACULAR.

    Anyway. Rambling.

Point being: MUSIC. AAAH, SO GOOD.

Also! Expect a giant music post soon, my darlings. I haven't done one in ages, and I really would like to. Considering the amount of time I spend writing other people's lyrics in my Moleskine, I... can't remember why I was even mentioning that. But I spend a lot of time doing so. It's kind of retarded. But, well, them's the breaks! Of not having any musical talent!
  • life!, music, bluesfest
