Kris stared out of the limo as they made their way back to the school. Lunch had been more like a business meeting than an actual lunch. Kris never learned anything more about his grandfather other than he was strict and expected a lot out of people. They had gone to a small restaurant out of town. His grandfather had deemed it the only worthy place to eat at.
Kris gave his grandfather one last look before he got out of the limo. He totally didn’t want to face his peers, but there was no choice. He knew there would be some kind of retribution, but he didn’t know what.
He was glad to see Adam perched on the school steps, as if he were waiting the whole the lunch period. And knowing Adam, he probably was. And to his relief, Allison Iraheta was with him. They were pretty much inseparable even though Allison was two grades below them. The redhead had stood out among the student body and Adam and Kris readily accepted when she moved to town.
“Hey guys, what’re you doing?” Kris asked scratching the back of his neck.
Adam looked up at Kris and smiled. “Well…I was kicking Iraheta’s butt at rat screw…but some nerd had the audacity to interpret us.” Adam winked.
“Yeah right Lambert. As if you can beat me. How red is your hand?” Allison shot back with a smug grin.
Adam rubbed his sore hand. “Anyways, how’d the meeting go with the old man?”
Kris’ smile faltered. “Interesting to say the least. How much does the school know?”
Adam tried his best to sound reassuring. “Well…at least you’re popular now?”
Kris sighed. “Great. This is the last I needed right now. I just wanted to graduate and go to a nice college…eventually find someone to love and bring home to mom, get married or whatever, have kids, grow old and die. Not take over some country for a crazy old man.”
Adam cringed. He knew that Kris had his life planned out, but he never thought that Kris wouldn’t have him in it. It hurt to know that he would never be more than a best friend. He knew he could deal with it, but could their friendship survive this fiasco? Adam didn’t want the answer to that.
“Well…I can tell where I’m not wanted.” Adam sounded put off. “Come my beautiful Allison, we shall remove our common selves from the prince. I’m sure he doesn’t want us to tarnish his good name. We shall marry so that our friendship may strong over these troubling times.” Adam swooned and then held out a hand to Allison, which she took giggling.
“Why my good sir, I agree with you.” With that the two started up the steps leaving a dumbfounded Kris behind.
Kris shook his head for moment and then shouted, “hey you two! Don’t leave me! I don’t want those leeches to get their hands on me!” Kris ran after them.
When he finally caught up the duo he was out of breath. “C’mon guys! I’m not gonna abandon you. I was hoping you would come with me!”
Adam turned his head to Allison. “Did you hear something my dear?”
Allison giggled. “Of course not my love. It must’ve been the wind.”
Kris stared at the back of their heads for a moment before an evil grin graced his face. “Well…then I guess I have no one to go with me to the Def Leppard concert next month. Now that I’m a prince…I’m pretty sure I can get tickets. All I have to do is pull a few strings.”
That stopped both of them in their tracks. Adam was the first one to whip around, followed by Allison. “Did you just say Def Leppard?” They asked in unison.
Kris laughed. “Yeah I did. I’m pretty sure I can tickets. Let me find out what I can do. I’m pretty sure I can score them.”
“You better not let us down Allen. Or I will have your hide.” Allison said, half joking.
“I agree with her. You will be lunch meat pipsqueak.” Adam promised.
“Pipsqueak? I thought we got rid of that nickname!” Kris moaned out loud.
“I don’t think you should be talking to a prince like that.” A black haired girl stepped in. “You should be nice to him and treat him like the royalty he is.
“Katrina.” Adam hissed. The two had never gotten along, even in elementary school. They were both drama queens and the town had never been big enough for the both of them. Adam just wished she had dropped dead.
“What?” She asked sweetly. “I’m just concerned for poor Kris here. What with the kind of friends he has and being a prince. Maybe you should hang out with us dear. These two certainly can’t be good company.” Katrina bat her eyelashes.
Kris gulped. He had never liked Katrina, but the girl was pretty. “I’m sorry. I’ve got plans.”
“Pity. Maybe next time then.” With that parting sentence, she left the trio.
All the tension that the three friends had, dissipated as the girl left. They had never liked the girl, she always had some kind of scheme up her sleeve and it was never good. And they were sometimes the butt of some of the schemes.
“Well let’s get to chem. I’m sure DioGuardi will throw a fit if we’re late.” Adam suggested. The other two nodded their heads in agreement.
“All right class settle down. I know that we have a ‘celebrity’ in our midst, but please no distractions.” Ms. Kara DioGuardi glanced over her class with a disproving gaze. Ever since the secretary blabbed that Kris Allen was a prince of Geneva, the whole school had gone crazy and now the teachers were left to deal with the mess.
Kara brought her yard stick down with a hard slam on her desk. The noise startled the unruly teenagers. Kara smirked. Good, she had their attention. Now for her little announcement, “class, since I had to use my ruler to settle you down…you know what this means. Pop quiz. Books away, paper and pencils out.” Oh yes…how she loved tormenting teenagers.
