Today was rather awesome, mostly because of me.

I received something nifty in the mail, completely out of the blue.

I finally went to see my grandmother. I haven't seen her since my grandfather's funeral last month, mostly because going to see her meant I had to face his absence. Tonight I went down with my mom and I'm glad I did.

Skiing is where I really feel accomplished though. Today I skied plenty of powder, ran our only double black diamond, and hiked up one of the old runs. This is after Sunday when I hit the Tunnel of Love and found yet more powder and Monday, my first night with Challenge Mountain. I'm pushing myself and it feels fabulous.

Actually I'm not the only one pushing me -- one of my buddies was out today and Sunday and he really encourages me, both by example and more explicitly. Sure, I fell over rather impressively in the Kitchen and I'm still not truly comfortable in powder. And yes, my run down 75 merely looked competent rather than amazing -- not to mention I got caught. (It's pretty much always closed so we ducked the rope. My buddy went first and just went for it; I took my time, giving the owner ample chance to spot me. To be fair, while he wasn't please he did say he'd open if I'd just ask. We all got caught by his dad on Sunday but he didn't seem to care.)

What matters is I'm actually doing those things. And besides -- very few people look amazing on that run. Hell, very few people look upright and turning. I know I didn't go down it last year and maybe not the year before that. I think I've only been down the Tunnel twice before and into the out of bounds powder run once last year. Today was my first time hiking. It's about time.

I am returning the favor -- another buddy was out with us today. It's his second time this year and he just hates being outside in the cold and snow. Today he had fun. He did a some runs that were far beyond what he thought he could do and he wants to come back. I couldn't be more proud.

So, how have you been awesome lately? What have you done to impress yourself?
