The first full chapter of The Mark of Athena
has been released on Rick Riordan's website. Be warned that I never read the first snippet of the first chapter that was released a few months ago - so this is really the first I've read about the new book.
(
Let the fangirling ensue! )
In a fantastical ship called the Argo II, seven demigods journey by air across the United States and by sea to Rome on their quest to defeat the earth mother, Gaea. Meanwhile, war is breaking out between the Roman and Greek demigods they left behind, and only Annabeth holds the key to restoring peace.
Also,
Percy looked so at ease, so happy.
BECAUSE HE'S ABOUT TO SEE YOU, ANNABETH. Awww! <33
RR is such a super troll though and I can't trust him. Something's telling me that Percy and Annabeth either won't have a reunion (evil snowman feeling, guys) or it won't be very long at all. Something will whisk them away from each other as soon as they get back together.
The shipper in me wants Annabeth's trouble with her mom to be related to Percy too, but I really doubt it'll be something as petty as that. Shame, because that would have been fun to see.

THIS. SO MUCH. I don't trust him at all! He's the worst! Though I do trust him to give his heroes a happy ending eventually. That's one thing I'm confident in: especially Percy, because he's made a point of naming him after the only ancient hero with a happy ending. So I take comfort in that, at least. :)

We've heard Percy complaining about how set in their ways the gods are before: I think it's safe to assume that Athena's going to tend to assume the worst in terms of Annabeth's supposed 'divided loyalties' because of Athena's deep-seated rivalry with Poseidon. So though I think there will definitely be more to Annabeth's ( ... )

In her pocket Annabeth carries a gift from her mother that came with an unnerving demand: Follow the Mark of Athena. Avenge me. Annabeth already feels weighed down by the prophecy that will send seven demigods on a quest to find-and close- the Doors of Death. What more does Athena want from her?
