It wasn't until I got into still-running manga that I discovered scanlations. I hated the huuuuge lag between Jp and American publishing.

Naruto used to be six years behind.

WELL, money grappling manga publisher, maybe if you didn't translate and release twice a god damn year I would buy your shit. Seriously, there are a few manga I read that put out a new chapter every week in Japan but are only released in about two volumes per year in America. Their entire system is ineffective in most cases.

Why don't they do their own scanlations for subscriptions or something if its such a huge concern? If they're the copyright holders in America it should be legal for them, right?

And when I say do their own scanlations, it's in relation to series that are regularly released and popular in America like Naruto and Bleach, which is what I'm sure these companies are pissing their pants over.

Bleach has gotten better but Naruto has jumped the shark with the Rap Octopus and stuff recently. They need to get back to the Sasuke/Naruto ust.

Naruto just *now* jumped the shark?

I can only dream that one day legal online distribution will occur.

akuma_river June 8 2010, 20:11:38 UTC
DMP has one so does Yen Press I think.

But it's like a rent thing instead of library. And you have like 48 hours to read it. It's real weird and just makes reading from mangafox or onemanga the better choice.

Exactly. I also think that only a few titles have that sort of legal online distribution thing going on.

I think I'm just bitter regarding US publishers because of DramaQueen.

DramaQueen is still a fucking mess.

I heard rumors they are coming back again. *sighs*

Actually because of the sucess of Kindle and iPad there is this MASSIVE move to their books as e-books on apps.

That's why I bitch about the censorship of gay titles and small presses in my journal. The big companies with money are getting backing and apple is letting them in but smaller presses like Yaoi Press and others are being fucked over.

Another thing I noticed is that this is only the US/Japanese side of it. There is nothing about China and Korea and other nations' scanlations. Just the U.S.

Good luck on that one. I don't read much manga these days, but what I do tends to be unlicensed in the US, let alone here. Most of the series I've read in recent years haven't been published in the US, or are being published by companies I have no great love for. Not to mention the fact that £8 a manga for something that can run on for 20+ books is hideous.

Like you I tend to buy second hand books, and I tend to get them for free. Manga, sadly, doesn't tend to find its way onto charity shop bookshelves, or even onto Amazon, Abe etc.

I know I can't really defend my intermittent bouts of piracy, no matter how hard I try. I'm just cheap.

Plus, I really really hate Tokyopop. I'd rather have some slightly questionable scanlations than sit through another westernised manga tbqh.

Tokyopop's done good for Togainu no Chi, Vassalord, Loveless and some others.

Maybe they've just got better? But the quality of the books and the paper themselves has dropped.

Yeah, I remember Loveless being done pretty well. Sometimes they did really very good translations, and sometimes awful ones (one that comes to mind is Tokyo Mew Mew, which they basically did a Cardcaptors on. You can tell I was a kid when I got into manga ...)

I never liked the quality of the books. On a weird note, France always seems to have done it better. I have a couple of French translated manga somewhere, and they have nice paper, slip covers etc. Not to mention that they were released a lot quicker.

"Tokyo Mew Mew, which they basically did a Cardcaptors on" ...I'd always wondered if when the manga said "English adaptation" if that meant edited.
