I'm actually at work right now, manning (womanning?) the mall store. Since we are right next to the entrance, the cold air is blowing right in our doors and I am so cold that my fingernails are blue. We haven't had a lot of foot traffic tonight, just a sale here and there, and I finished the book I brought. It will be nice to go visit my brother at HIS mall job after I close up here! I bet he's warmer.
Thanksgiving was lovely. We ate at Bryon's parents' house, along with his parents, his sister, the six nephews and a family friend. We had a nice meal and played Yahtzee afterward. At five we showed up at my parents' house with the Wii, visited with my grandparents, aunt and cousin and ate dessert(s). Everyone got a kick out of the Wii, including my grandmother whose first reaction was "I'd like to try that!" The funniest moment was when my brother and cousin were boxing each other... as Grayson put it, "We look like Rock'em Sock'em Robots!" I have video to prove it.
Bryon and I got home around 10 and once again found Support Your Local Sheriff! on TV (it never gets old!). This morning we woke up around 11... ahhh, the joy of sleeping in on a Friday! I made Bryon drop me off for work at 4 because there was no way I was going to attempt to find a parking space on Black Friday. The mall is pretty busy.
Before I forget to jot this all down, the book I finished was
Snow Falling on Cedars by David Guterson. Once again, I've had this book for a very long time and only now got around to reading it. It was a very interesting book. Focusing nominally on a murder trial, it examined the experiences of various citizens of a small town on an island off of Washington State as their community lived through World War II. With a signficant portion of the population being of Japanese ancestry, this included a look at the Japanese-American experience of internment, which was completely shocking. The ideas dealt with, such as fear-based discrimination and the emotional hardship of war, are certainly relevant even now. I liked Guterson's writing style, although I thought the book got a little bogged-down in parts. I think I might check into the movie at some point-maybe get it from Netflix while Bryon is away. I'd definitely recommend the book (D, I'm looking at you!).
I hope everyone's Thanksgiving was pleasant and spent among family and friends.
