suddenly rapt

I've really been enjoying The Well of Ascension, but recently I realized that I'm not quite emotionally immersed. The world is unique, I like the characters and problems and how it's flowing, but I wasn't feeling it like I wanted to, if that makes any sense.

A later scene made up for that.

Zane came to meet Vin in the night, to take her away. Only then did she realize how much she wanted to stay with Elend, and why.

Vin shook her head. "No, he just loves me."
"I love you."

As so often happens, they're using the word "love" in two completely different ways.

Vin means that Elend wants her to do what moves her, even if that means she leaves him. Zane means that he wants her to run away with him, and to save him. When she refuses, he tries to kill her. The word "love" is far too small to describe such different things.

I like how the scene played out, and totally didn't expect the revelation about the kandra spy.

Then the scene of her wounded, bleeding, as Sazed tends to her wounds and she asks him if he knows any wedding ceremonies.

"Which one is the shortest?"

This is a year, I think, after Elend asked her to marry him. So much of her doubts dissipated after her epiphany.

A couple of armies outside the city, few allies, and they'll possibly be running away into other dangers.

"I don't know what kind of time we'll have together, but I want some, at least."

Six hundred pages of danger and self-doubt and confusion made these twenty pages feel rather sweet.
