We were very happy to kickstart the March holidays with the -
金发姑娘和三只熊 Goldilocks and the Three Bears (in Mandarin) by
SRT's The Little Company.
We have been to several of SRT's children's plays and I thought this was the best thus far!
Following the hugely successful English production in 2013, the Mandarin version of
Goldilocks and the Three Bears (金发姑娘和三只熊) features music and lyrics by the Laurence Olivier award-winning West-End musical theatre songwriting duo George Stiles and Anthony Drewe.
The actors did a fabulous job - they had us laughing along to the antics of the characters and the camaderie of the Bear family was very infectious. The songs were catchy and the set and props were visually stunning and clever.
In particular, I liked that the entire play was a full-on Mandarin immersion for my boys. They were a bit resistant to the idea of watching a Mandarin play at first but the storyline was pretty easy to follow, and soon they were howling with laughter and lapping the entire show up ;)
I also really appreciated the small lessons they weaved into the story about conservation of forests and respecting the space and belongings of others. There was also a fair amount of audience participation - they got the kids to recount how to make oatmeal and shout the Mandarin version of 'Timber' when the woodcutter fell the trees.
I am keeping my fingers crossed that SRT comes up with more top-notch Chinese plays for kids. Definitely a enjoyable production not to be missed - I highly recommend it!
Great news - SRT is now offering a
TLC Season Ticket with discounts up to 20% enabling young audiences to catch several shows of their choice without bursting the budget.
