Here we go again: Lucasfilm's film department, which has been trying (and failing) to get a new Star Wars movie off the ground since the release of The Rise of Skywalker in 2019, is taking another stab at it. Simon Kinberg has reportedly signed on to produce a new trilogy of movies. Kinberg was responsible for ( Read more... )

I've never been a big Star Wars fans, but how do the hardcore Star Wars people feel about all this new content? Do you feel overwhelmed with riches, or do you feel like how I feel mostly these days as a Star Trek fan: like the franchise is being diluted in overall quality with a bunch of crummy content?

to me, it feels like there's an identity crisis going on with star wars right now. it's turned into a bit of a joke with how often they hype a new movie, before quietly shelving it and hoping no one notices. with that said, i don't really want star wars to get marvel'd with a bunch of movies a year. i also think shifting mando from tv to theatrical reeks of a panic move (and it's not like i'm a mando hater!) just to put something in theatres.

but turning mando into a movie is a symptom of a bigger problem with star wars right now: they're so scared of trying anything new that they're going in circles. they should branch out of the skywalker timeline, but the one time they tried that with the acolyte all the worst fucking bigots in the fandom threw tantrums as usual and lucasfilm tends to cave to them every single time. james mangold is allegedly making a movie about the dawn of the jedi, which could be a good direction just for something different... but then we're back wondering what the likelihood of it even getting made is, ( ... )

thanks for the explanation! I watched a little of Mando but I think haven't watched since end of S2.

Trek fans are mostly cool except for the very confused ones who complain about it turning "woke" when that was kind of always the point from the beginning lol. and I get slightly annoyed by younger fans who grew up in different times looking back on old episodes that used allegory to do social commentary with too modern a lens, but it's a minor quibble

totally, i think that history of progressivism in trek makes a difference in the fan base (and it's ridiculous when people pretend it hasn't been there). there's always been very shitty vocal star wars fans, but it's only gotten worse as outrage farming youtubers yell over each other.

May they never be forgiven for how they handled The Acolyte.

The new TV shows I get excited for, but I'm blah on all these movie announcements. I think the quality in the TV shows vary. Book of Boba Fett was trash while The Acolyte had its moments, but didn't feel coherent to me. I'm excited for The Skeleton Crew though.

I actually really wish they had such with the 'Legends' stuff because at least it would have provided a messy but existing skeleton to work with, rather than just a bunch of spaghetti thrown at a screen and hoping some of it sticks.

I’m an easier person to please so everything I say is probably not correct for the fandom.

But I really enjoy the new novels, games, and shows. Wasn’t huge on the latest trilogy as it progressed and The Acolyte though. Watching but didn’t love them like I’ve loved everything else.

What I personally hate about the new content is how much they tie it back to existing canon and lore, and how that then dilutes the broader lore, meaning and stories overall. Of course changes happens with each new addition to the IP, it happened under Lucas with the Prequels as well, but it’s been rapidly escalating and in a non-linear fashion since Mando and the subsequent TV shows, movies, whatever.

[And now I rant]The issue I have is that Star Wars had a massive extended universe pre-Disney with books, games, comics, animation etc which you could pick and choose to engage with. It flourished because there were so few (relative) properties. Lots of fans loved it and I loved parts of it too but honestly? There was also a lot of crap in there, characters got Uber powered, the concept of the force was radically altered, things didn’t make sense etc... )

I was a huge fan of the original, and even enjoyed the prequels. Now they're just cranking out content just to crank out content and it's like no thank you. I'm tired.

I've been checked out of the TV/movie universe for a while now because the fandom is truly unhinged. Being a Star Wars fan AND a Star Trek fan is truly humbling because one community can articulate their thoughts and criticisms without being racist, misogynistic, homophobic, etc... and the other one is Star Wars.

I've mostly been focusing on print media when it comes to the Star Wars stuff I do consume anymore, particularly the comics. Star Wars: Battle of Jakku (2024-) takes place after Return of the Jedi and has so far been really good, with a lot of focus being put on Leia coping with her Vader!trauma and being a General in the wake of the Rebels' victory. Ewoks (2024-) takes place around the same time and I was really surprised by how well-written the first issue was. Also, they're just so stinking cute.

I feel like Star Wars really shined when it had something to say. Now it feels empty and meaningless, with the occasional hit like Andor. Disney defanged a lot of the message of the movies in the pursuit of another franchise machine. I'm not excited by the constant endless content and just focus on the six movies that I really do like

As a fan I'm mildly checked out tbh. I haven't bothered watching most of the new tv series they've done (exception being Andor.) But as a fan I think the sanest way to exist within that fandom is to be checked out. There's a chunk of Star Wars fans that are truly the worst.

It’s very frustrating bc I remember sitting with my husband (who is an even bigger Star Wars fan than I am) right before The Force Awakens, and we couldn’t believe we were about to see a new Star Wars movie. And I remember looking at him after the movie ended and we were both like “…eh…” I’d rather no more new content than a bunch of “…eh ( ... )
