Here we go again: Lucasfilm's film department, which has been trying (and failing) to get a new Star Wars movie off the ground since the release of The Rise of Skywalker in 2019, is taking another stab at it. Simon Kinberg has reportedly signed on to produce a new trilogy of movies. Kinberg was responsible for ( Read more... )

to me, it feels like there's an identity crisis going on with star wars right now. it's turned into a bit of a joke with how often they hype a new movie, before quietly shelving it and hoping no one notices. with that said, i don't really want star wars to get marvel'd with a bunch of movies a year. i also think shifting mando from tv to theatrical reeks of a panic move (and it's not like i'm a mando hater!) just to put something in theatres.

but turning mando into a movie is a symptom of a bigger problem with star wars right now: they're so scared of trying anything new that they're going in circles. they should branch out of the skywalker timeline, but the one time they tried that with the acolyte all the worst fucking bigots in the fandom threw tantrums as usual and lucasfilm tends to cave to them every single time. james mangold is allegedly making a movie about the dawn of the jedi, which could be a good direction just for something different... but then we're back wondering what the likelihood of it even getting made is, because the movies keep falling apart in development. around and around it goes.

ANYWAYS. i could go on but this is too long already lol. i'm a casual trek fan and i envy that trek fans seem to be pretty cool on the whole, and can discuss the state of the franchise without utter meltdowns.

thanks for the explanation! I watched a little of Mando but I think haven't watched since end of S2.

Trek fans are mostly cool except for the very confused ones who complain about it turning "woke" when that was kind of always the point from the beginning lol. and I get slightly annoyed by younger fans who grew up in different times looking back on old episodes that used allegory to do social commentary with too modern a lens, but it's a minor quibble

totally, i think that history of progressivism in trek makes a difference in the fan base (and it's ridiculous when people pretend it hasn't been there). there's always been very shitty vocal star wars fans, but it's only gotten worse as outrage farming youtubers yell over each other.

May they never be forgiven for how they handled The Acolyte.
