I’m watching May December now and for whatever reason there are some similarities in the music, even the opening scene in a way, that reminds me of Silence of the Lambs?? There’s even a bug element lmao. Idk the score keeps reminding me of it. For those that have watched both am I crazy? Lol

I didn't make that connection when watching, but now that you point it out I can definitely see connections and similarities there. And in a way, both are deeply unsettling movies about predators.

Yeah, that kind of music style fits.

the score for may december is actually an adaptation/re-orchestration of that for the film the go-between (1971)

Idk, I liked Natalie in Black Swan more than in Jackie. But I also didn't like Jackie at all, so that could play a part in my choice.

I have never seen Far From Heaven, but I should get on that! I didn't see Still Alice, either, but I don't really have any desire to catch up on that one. I do remember people positing that Julianne's win for that was more of a career award. She's so good in the things I have seen her in - my fave role of hers is probably in Boogie Nights.

The quickness with which they both admitted lying to get jobs, lol. And turning down a role bc they didn't like someone else in the movie... wonder which projects?!?

Natalie looks amazing in that pantsuit.

Still Alice gets called a glorified Lifetime movie, but I'm an outlier who liked it. I loved Julianne Moore's performance & while I'm ambivalent about Kristen Stewart's acting skills, I thought she fit her role perfectly. The subject matter is tough, but the movie gets at something very real and horrifying for a lot of families, and I found it very gripping.

Yeah I found it very moving. I had no idea others didn't feel the same, but I literally still get choked up if I look at the poster for too long on netflix

I think maybe she feels this way about Black Swan because it was almost spun like she was doing all of the ballerina stuff and she wasn't

They were also asked if they're "genuinely offended" if they're asked to audition for a role at this stage in their careers. Natalie Portman said she is, Julianne Moore said she isn't. Natalie Portman says at this point, you know what she can do and what she can't.

get over yourself, natalie! you're no julianne moore, so if it's fine for julianne, it's fine for you.

(ngl idk if natalie's reaction is reasonable, i just don't like her or her acting so i'm reading everything she says uncharitably.)

Natalie doesn't have much range, so maybe she's correct when she says they should know by now what she can't do.

Yeah Natalie lacks range. Watching May December made me realize she's at her best in subdued roles cause I think that's where her strength is. Expecting dramatic roles out of hers is bit up and down cause I think that's where she's weak. Especially crying scenes cause I always think she comes off hammy.

The one scene where she's doing the monologue of Gracie's letter.....ngl I thought she was 2 secs from going "Ani you're breaking my heart 🥺" lol cause I immediately remembered that!!

I think her crying scenes in Jackie are the better ones and even there it wants to veer into hammy but manages to resist.

I think Natalie was good in Black Swan but that's because she was playing herself a bit. I thought the final scene was her best performance in that movie but prior I didn't think most of it was Oscar-winning. I thought the cinematography and lighting was great and maybe did a lot of the heavy lifting in terms of setting the mood and atmosphere.

Jackie was a better role for her cause it's removed from her. Her performance has it's clunkiness to it because of the accent she had to put on but I kept thinking she should've won for that over Black Swan.

I haven't seen Far From Heaven (another Todd Haynes film) or Still Alice but Julianne Moore probably should've won for The Hours. I knew Still Alice was the makeup award cause I don't remember hearing much buzz for that one outside of her possibily winning an Oscar.
