Still Alice was a glorified Lifetime movie and so is May/December. Julianne shouldn't have won for that, but it just shows how lame the Academy is. That same year she won the Best Actress award at Cannes for Maps to the Stars, which was a much better performance from her. It was ignored by the Academy because it showed the ugly underbelly of the Hollywood community and David Cronenberg has never played the Hollywood game. They don't award on merit and her award proves it.

I didn't appreciate Black Swan, it's another movie that was 90% PR hype. I do think she was better in Jackie and it was a more demanding role.

If you'd like to see studio PR in action, read the comments almost anywhere about May December. The shilling is out of control. It's even more funny now that they have ChatGPT writing the comments.

That said, I watched yesterday and thought it was fine but not particularly compelling.

Fully agree with both of them. But rarely do great actors win Oscars for their best performances.

Great actors win when the voters finally decide they've done enough movies to earn one.

This is what I was going to say. So many times actors never win for the role they actually deserved it for.

I'm not much of an Aronofsky fan, but I prefer Black Swan to Jackie. It's at least entertainingly camp, whereas I think Jackie is trying to be a brainy drama and becomes unintentionally, unenterainingly camp.
