A/N: words in italics are either thoughts or flashback. I had this idea before finishing “Notice Me,” but I never wrote it until now. You might see some similarities with a certain, special drama, but don’t worry, it won’t be same.
Without looking, Sungmin walked towards Kyuhyun’s bed. He didn’t know why he was there; his subconscious told him to stay next to sleeping Kyuhyun. Maybe… just maybe he was waiting for Kyuhyun to wake up right now and accept his state right now - a fox. His white fur shone as the full moon’s light entered Kyuhyun’s bedroom. As he moved closer to Kyuhyun’s face, he quickly walked back as Kyuhyun stirred, giving his back to Sungmin. How he wished he was human so Kyuhyun could freely love him as a human and not as a terrible animal who “eat humans.”
He was cursed million years ago. T.Vs, radios, nor newspapers existed back then; everything was told as stories or gossip from people. In those times, Sungmin was the prince of NanHan -today known as Seoul. He learned the important subjects needed: math, science, grammar and calligraphy, and history. His parents taught him the good manners, especially to respect the elders. Basically, he was the perfect son for any parent. Unfortunately, some people hated him for what he was. Pure with hatred, one poor man went to a witch and begged to curse the prince. Of course the witch accepted with the condition that she would get the poor man’s soul. Without thinking, the man accepted and soon, his soul was captured by the witch while the prince started to change into a fox in his room. What the witch herself didn’t know was that the curse she implanted on the prince had a condition: change into a fox only on full moon.
Since the day Sungmin turned into a fox, everyone asked him if he was sick, and the same answer came from his mouth: “no, I’m okay, thank you for your concern.” But behind that answer, Sungmin wasn’t okay; in fact, he was dumbfounded, shocked, and concerned at the same time. He somehow knew it was a curse because, come on, magic doesn’t happen out of nowhere. And no, magic of Disney didn’t exist back then, not that it exists now. So Sungmin decided to find the witch (because she is the only person who can do witchcraft) and sentence her to death. 1 year later, Sungmin found her, but just like the speed of light, she disappeared with a “poof.” Years later, Sungmin found himself alone without the support of his parents, since they died of an unknown disease 1 year after the witch disappeared.
One thing Sungmin was glad for having a curse is that his appearance never changed, not even one wrinkle appeared after 50 years of being alive. Yet, this curse wouldn’t let him die. He tried to suicide and nothing happened. He shot himself 5 times, he bleed, and nothing happened. So he figured that he would live forever unless someone takes that curse out of him, which is 0.01% because there are no witches in the modern era.
Soon after he adapted to a new lifestyle, he met Eunhyuk in a park. Actually, Eunhyuk was the one who was waiting for Sungmin to help him snap out of the curse, yet nothing happened. Eunhyuk and Sungmin talked about their lives, and Sungmin found out that Eunhyuk was cursed with “live eternally without aging.” Since Eunhyuk knew that Sungmin didn’t have anywhere to stay (he did some research, not stalking), he ended up offering Sungmin his house so they both could stay together. Later on, Sungmin entered DongKuk High school much to Eunhyuk’s pleading. He met Donghae, Ryeowook, Yesung, and most importantly, Kyuhyun. Since that day, he couldn’t take his eyes off of Kyuhyun.
The first time he saw Kyuhyun was on the first day of class. He introduced himself and bowed, receiving round of applause from students to show that he was welcomed to the class. When he lifted his head, he saw Kyuhyun staring him seriously. He saw that everything blurred except for Kyuhyun and his creepy stare.
“Sungmin, Sungmin,” Sungmin shook his head as Mr. Hong called. He looked at the teacher then back to all students just to smile. Some girls sighed heavily like they were in heaven and others hid their flushed faces. All the guys except Kyuhyun stared angrily at Sungmin.
“You can sit next to Kyuhyun. Kyuhyun, raise your hand please,” Mr. Hong commanded and instantly, Kyuhyun raised his hand.
As Sungmin walked gracefully towards Kyuhyun, all the stares were directly on him like if he was a magnet. And as soon Sungmin sat down, his inner aegyo kicked in.
“Hi,” Sungmin said with his cute voice he naturally had. “Do you like meat?”
“… yes,” Kyuhyun answered without looking at Sungmin.
“Which kind of meat do you like? Cow’s? Pig’s? sheep’s?” Sungmin carefully put his hand on Kyuhyun’s right arm to hold on to it. Kyuhyun obviously noticed that and carefully enough, he pried Sungmin’s hands away.
“I like pig’s meat mostly,” Kyuhyun said, this time keeping his distance away from Sungmin. “can you stop asking me right now? The class started 10 minutes ago. You should be copying the class.”
“Oh sorry,” Sungmin pouted and turned his body to the chalkboard and waited. How should I copy the class when I don’t have anything to write on?
“Um, Kyuhyun, where do I write the class on?” Sungmin asked, blushing in the process. Even though he adapted to the new environment, he still didn’t know what a notebook and pencil were.
“…on a notebook?” Kyuhyun took Sungmin’s bag that was hung from his chair and took out a notebook and a pencil which were handed to Sungmin. “Copy the class by writing whatever it says there to here with that pencil.”
“Thanks…”
“No problem…” Kyuhyun said after 5 minutes.
--
Sure that conversation was bizarre; no one would go and ask another person “how do I copy the class?” But sure that conversation was the beginning of their friendship. A few days later, Donghae joined the group thanks to Eunhyuk. Donghae didn’t have problem socializing with Kyuhyun and Sungmin, actually, he was one of Kyuhyun’s friends too. Then, Yesung and Ryeowook joined the group after 2 weeks. They joined not because of Eunhyuk, but because of Sungmin. Ryeowook was bullied by a gang of students, and Sungmin happened to walk by there. He ran to help Ryeowook by using his martial arts skills and threatening the whole gang that if they bullied innocent people, he would hunt them like a fox. Since that day, Ryeowook befriended with Sungmin and dragged Yesung to join as well.
One night, Sungmin, Eunhyuk, Donghae, and Kyuhyun went to the movies to watch Fast Five since it was Donghae’s birthday. Eunhyuk, being generous, paid all the tickets and popcorn while Donghae paid the sodas. At the middle of the movie, Sungmin saw fur on his hand. He immediately ran away from the theater, leaving Donghae and Kyuhyun full of questions. Eunhyuk told them to watch the movie while he goes to find Sungmin. As expected, he found Sungmin in a park near the theater, with white fur and clothes spread in front of him. He looked up and saw the full moon.
“You wish there was no full moon today, right?” Eunhyuk asked, kneeling in front of the white fox that was hidden between bushes. Sungmin just nodded since he couldn’t talk when he was a fox.
“I’ll tell them that you felt bad and went back to your house.” Again, the fox nodded. No one knew that Sungmin lived with Eunhyuk. Whenever there was a group project, Sungmin would stay in school. Whenever Donghae and Kyuhyun wanted to visit Sungmin and Eunhyuk, they wouldn’t stay home; instead, they would go to a near park and talk there. Whenever Sungmin had to go back, he would send Kyuhyun or anyone to go first.
Tonight was one of many nights with full moon, and Sungmin had to hide from Kyuhyun again. They were buying milk from a convenience store when suddenly, fur appeared on his face. He panicked and ran away. Kyuhyun ran outside the store, shouting “Sungmin!” in hope that Sungmin would hear, but it was in vain. So to make up that time he lost with Kyuhyun, he walked all the way to Kyuhyun’s house and secretly entered his room through an opened window.
He will never be a normal person; he will always be an animal.
