"Kaylee!" Mal was storming through the ship, hollering at the top of his lungs for his missing mechanic.

Adeptly, she ignored him as she was crammed into the life support machinery room above the hallway to the bridge. A routine check was required of her daily, but it usually only involved Kaylee popping in, taking a glance and moving on to the escape pods. This time, however, she was checking through all of the materials - the tanks, ventilation shafts, bellows, filtration network; she even took an hour to scrub down the outside of the algae tanks. She spoke to the algae as she scrubbed.

"Not here, Cap'n," she mumbled, "not any damn where. Not any damn body." She switched hands when her wrist began to ache, and scrubbed harder. "Doctor Tam! Doctor of people with skin and blood and fleshy parts. Parts that go together, just like machines got parts!"

The Captain's heavy boots clumped down the hallway underneath Kaylee, and a lighter more prissy set of footsteps followed along. Kaylee ceased her scrubbing to listen better.

"Doc, you made her run off, and you best find her. Otherwise, I'd get real familiar with my ship and how to fix it! Dǒngma?" the Captain continued storming.

"But…I'm the last person she'll come out for! I was…awful to her!" Simon's uppity step chased on after Mal.

"Ri shao gou shi bing if you want specifics," Kaylee moved on from scrubbing to recheck that the ventilation shafts were clear. "You know what, little algae? I am just as important as people doctors! I keep people alive too, you know. I've had my hands," Kaylee raised them above her face, "these hands! In every nook and cranny of this ship! I know Serenity better than any doctor would know a person. But does that merit anything to the big and mighty Simon Tam!? O' course not! I got no paper or records of how smart I am so it don't count! No matter I could strip ya down and put ya back together on the inside of a month!" She'd missed a speck on the last tank and went back to work, scrubbing away.

"She's tending to the ocean Cap'n and it's helping the hurricane subside," River's dreamy voice floated upward, directly to where Kaylee was scrubbing away. Mal's voice scolded River but she just giggled and danced away back to the bridge.
