"Okay, it ain't really what it looks like," Kaylee said from her position on the bed in the infirmary, tear stains down her face and the bottom of one leg of her coveralls cut off. It was actually exactly how it looked.
Mal was hovering over her, probably mostly worried but acting like he was angry 'cause his mechanic just broke her leg and scuffed up her knees. She couldn't help it; Kaylee was naturally accident prone.
"Yeah? Mind fillin' in the blanks, then?" Okay, judging by his tone he was less worried and more angry. Kaylee was happy for the pain killers Simon had given her. It dulled the pain almost completely, but it only dulled the effect of Mal's glare marginally. Probably weren't anything that could dull that all the way.
Kaylee sighed and couldn't help but look over at River, who was watching from the corner, definitely more worried and guilty than anything. They'd just been playing, it wasn't her fault. Mal wheeled on the girl and stared at her until she started to giggle. That was River's way of dealing with bein' scolded, she always giggled. But the both of them stayed silent. Neither wanted to be the one to tell Mal that they'd decided to play see-saw with the new cargo and that the bar had slipped, dumping River onto the floor without so much as a scratch and throwing Kaylee clear across the cargo hold and into the stairs feet first.
Mal cussed as he stormed out of the infirmary. "I'm gonna find out how my mechanic went and got her leg broke, and when it ain't from one o' you, the punishment's gonna triple!" But River just kept giggling, and Kaylee couldn't help but follow suit, which she blamed on the pain killers.
