"D4N has never had luck with online dating. He's said he has been doing it for three-years and failed to get a single date off it" I blurted out as I sat across the table with her, debating whether or not I could get another glass of wine out of the near empty bottle that sat between /KAT_M and I.
"What? No." she spouted out in disbelief, then continued, "Let me see some pictures of him!" in a playful tone that beautiful women are known for.
Obligingly, I pulled out of my phone and opened his facebook profile. I placed the phone between us and invited her to scroll through his profile pictures.
"He's a nice looking guy, I don't understand...." she began with a warm, nurturing tone and then suddenly a "what's this?" rang out. Her tone immediately changed as she came across a picture of D4N and a former girlfriend. "Oh, that's Stephanie - that's his ex-girlfriend. No big deal, she is engaged, or married, to someone else now." I responded. Her head cocked up from the phone as she gave me a look of dreadful disapproval. /KAT_M was very good at giving stern looks of disapproval in the form of face contortions that almost looked demonic. They reminded me of the unwavering disapproval that would come from a stern grandmother from the 'old world', before grandmothers were known for love and kindness. /KAT_M did have a bit of the 'old world' in her, she grew up with a strict overbearing mother in a small coal-country town.
I brushed it off. "It's an old picture, he really cared about her..." I found myself smiling and reminiscing about old relationships I once had. I was there when D4N had been dating Stephanie and as such the pictures brought back found memories of a life in a different place - a different time. I was also reminded of the happiness D4N once shared with Stephanie, of the happiness I once shared during those times...
"This is ridiculous" she exclaimed, her curiosity turned to fury and she irately scanned through D4N's profile looking for pictures of Stephanie. "And this?! How about this?! And what about this one?!" she shrieked as she showed me picture after picture of D4N and his former girlfriend - a girl that had moved on. With each picture I softly smiled and recalled the moments that composed a time long ago. I thought it slightly romantic that D4N hadn't deleted the images of Stephanie, that he honored the time they had together and left them on the page as soft reminder of the way things once were.
"No. He needs to delete this shit. Delete it all and move on. That's why he can't find a girlfriend. Women - women hate seeing this! Women get extremely jealous over seeing previous girlfriends" she paused for a moment, "And what about this picture? She is engaged! He needs to move on!" I was too caught up in the nostalgia to refute her. I let it go. Perhaps it was best to delete the past and move on, but some things are easier said than done.
