The concrete road was enveloped in a tranquil silence, marred by the occasional passing cars.
Rainie clenched her fists as she waited, pursing her lips every so often. The wind brushed against her hair as she stood beside the tunnel, straining her ears until she could hear that familiar loud roar.
The sudden rush signaled his arrival; headlights appeared and slowly it came to a stop right before her.
The headlights lowered as Rainie rubbed her arms from the cold breeze, lowering her eyes to the ground as the driver pulled off his helmet.
Jongwoon gave a questioning look. "You've rejected my offers before constantly. What's changed your mind?"
Rainie shrugged lightly. "I decided I needed a change in pace in life."
Jongwoon tapped the handlebars of his bike. "This may be too much for you to handle."
"Does this mean that I waited for no reason?" She asked. Jongwoon leaned back in his seat, giving her a look over as he reached for something on the side of the motorcycle. Rainie's hands reached out as Jongwoon handed her the star-littered helmet.
"You were expecting me not to reject you?"
Jongwoon shrugged. "I was hopeful." He lowered his eyes as he leaned over the handlebars. "You could still say no."
"I think I've said no long enough." Rainie reasoned, surprising Jongwoon as she daringly sat behind him, about to put on her helmet when she said, "Except... Don't go too fast."
Jongwoon chuckled as he put on his own. "I can't promise you that.”
He tightened his hands on the handles, the roaring of the motor behind him increased as his speed accelerated. Rainie tightened her hands around his torso, holding back a scream as they made a sharp turn, the lights flickering past. She mustered all her strength to stay put, fingers digging into his shirt. Jongwon's smile widen.
This adventure had become their nightly routine.
She remembered how Jongwoon would push back her hair behind her ears after each ride right before her house. Even now, she waited by that familiar road, eyes searching for the headlights. Straining her ears, as if hopeful that she could somehow hear the whisper of his voice; an intoxicating sound she couldn't resist.
The road remained silent that night just like before. With the helmet dangling on her fingers, she waited until she felt a pair of hands covering her eyes.
She tried to pull away the hands when she was forcibly turned and met his. "Are you trying to scare me?"
"Not at all." Jongwon insisted. "I just thought we should slow down our pace."
Rainie laughed as she reached for his hand just when Jongwoon pulled the helmet away from her and held it by his side. They walked with interlocked hands beneath that high bridge, staying by the side of that silent road that echoed their laughter, escaping into the starry night.
