X-Men: First Class

Jun 03, 2011 18:28

I've been eagerly anticipating X-Men: First Class because helloooo, have you seen the trailers which promised epic manlove?!

I saw it last night on the opening day with the LJ gang, and the manlove was indeed Epic and totally exceeded all expectations for this very satisfied fangirl :D I can't recall a movie this slashy since Sherlock Holmes, but personally I think the last truly epic one was Red Cliff.

This latest film instalment in the X-Men series goes all the way back to the 1960s, when mutants were not known to the rest of society yet and the X-Men had not been founded and provides a lot of backstory for the previous X-Men characters that we've already seen. I'm not really sure if this is meant to be a re-boot, ignoring the ones done previously (in the vein of Batman Begins) or to serve as direct prequel (like the Star Wars series) because it feels like it could be either despite the little references to the existing movies.

There are a lot of characters to cover in X-Men and so actually it felt like there were a lot of storylines (some integrated better than others) while the main story arc of how the villain, Sebastian Shaw, was trying to start a third world war was a little overly complicated to me. Maybe I'm just dumb, or just wasn't paying enough attention but halfway through I gave up trying to understand what was the exact plan :x

So as mentioned above, the best parts of the movie obviously involved Charles Xavier and Erik Lensherr (Professor X and Magneto -- sorry if this happens to be true to the comics or whatever but I kinda wanted to laugh when it turns out that Mystique was the one who came up with these names) played by the equally slashy actors James McAvoy and Michael Fassbender (more on this later). I mean, disregarding the fact that it was just so plain slashy, it was actually a very interesting story which unfortunately had such a tragic ending.

01) Their first meeting. LOL I was already flailing when I realised it was the moment they were going to meet and it totally blew my mind as I didn't realise THIS WAS HOW IT WAS GOING TO PLAY OUT.

Erik attempts to kill Shaw on his yacht, but is thwarted by Emma Frost and ends up in the water when as it turns out, the CIA, led by Charles, is also on their way to apprehend Shaw as well. When the mission is aborted because Emma Frost counters Charles with her own telepathic abilities to stop him from detecting their position, Charles insists they must save this mutant he can sense in the water and jumps into the sea to rescue him. He ends up jumping on Erik's back (GAWD, this totally gives new meaning to this quote), tells him that he's not alone (!!!! be still, my heart) and finally manages to convince Erik to stop before he kills himself trying to kill Shaw etc etc. The rest is history.

02) Charles knowing that Erik would leave and is already waiting for him.
What do you know about me? Everything. EXCUSE ME, DYING DYING DEAD.

02) Travelling around to recruit fellow mutants particularly, when they're lying in the same bed together looking for Angel. This part gave me a Supernatural-ish vibes, with that shot of them getting of the car together.

03) Sitting on the steps together and chatting. Haha, I have to confess that I totally thought about Gossip Girl.

04) Training. Charles accessing Erik's memories to find that place between rage and serenity to help his harness/control his power. There was much touching in this scene ahem.

05) The post-fight scene when Charles has been hit by the bullet and ERIK IS LITERALLY HOLDING HIM IN HIS ARMS, and I felt like we were all gonna expire in our seats. Despite all the omg!LOL at their previous scenes, I felt quite affected by this -- can't express how tragic and sad I found the ending to be D':

I was texting a friend afterwards, as she saw it yesterday too and we were both very D: D: thinking about this again before focusing our discussion on the happier moments once more.

Already planning to watch this at least one more time :D :D :D

Okay, this part has no relevance to the above but I just thought about it so I'm just going throw this in anyway: when Erik and Raven kissed, I cringed. I can't be the only one who found this part totally out of place in the movie?

Related to above, there is also OBVIOUS and EPIC love between James McAvoy and Michael Fassbender as documented in various interview videos and articles. I also love how they see the wuv between Professor X and Magneto too. Nice to know too that it was real-life chemistry which translated well onto the big screen.;)

There's a lot of stuff around the internets, particularly around tumblr, the place where fandom goes now. There isn't an LJ comm yet. Anyhoo, these are the best or more interesting links I've watched/read so far:

  • Sky - Face to Face interview

Basically 12 mins of Fassy fawning over James. * How he's been impressed since he saw James in a ditch on the set of Band of Brothers
    * How he was intrigued when the director called him for the movie but then he found out that James would be playing a young Charles, "it was definitely a big draw"
    * Being srs business about getting the relationship in the movie right
    * Stealing and driving a caddy cart together and crashing into a Lexus, which remains his fondest memory on the set and he now has a scar on his leg as a "little love memento"
  • Getting silly at the X-Men: First Class press conference
It seem obvious you guys have a great rapport. It's a big cast to feel that relationship. Was it an instant connection, or just from working together did you all fall into each other?

McAvoy: I fell into Michael on the first day. And the rest was beautiful. Oh, it just happened. I didn't mean it!
Fassbender: One thing led to the other. Kevin and I changing helmets, we were rubbing helmets a lot. You get to know one another on a very intimate level.
McAvoy: Then that bond was broken and suddenly he's not calling me anymore. Yeah, he's doing Prometheus. We shared something!
Bacon: Come over later and polish my helmet.
    Fassbender: Spit polish.
LMAO, you can't make this sort of thing up!

  • Video interview
Q: You know, extreme talent could be called a mutation in some ways...
Fassbender: [cutting her off] Could be called James McAvoy
McAvoy: Don't label me, man. Don't label me.
Awww! Otherwise known as *hearts-in-eyes* ;)

  • James McAvoy: 'X-Men is a love story'
James McAvoy thinks 'X-Men: First Class' is a "love story" between two friends. He said: "It's kind of a love story, like 'Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid'.

James and Michael screen-tested for the roles together and James hoped from their first auditions that they would be cast together.

He added: "It was very important that the actors playing Xavier and Magneto, who are at the emotional core of the story, got on together and when we first met we hit it off and I think we both thought, 'Please God, let it be us two.'
    HE GETS IT TOO.

  • Fassbender has an interesting vision for the progression of the series: X-Men: The Golden Years
Fassbender and McAvoy are signed on for the next two X-Men films, should they happen. Fassbender has an interesting vision for the progression of the series: X-Men: The Golden Years, with the two Mutants living in a retirement home. "Magneto and Charles are still battling it out. Their powers are depleting. The best he can do is move a dinner tray across the room," says Fassbender.
The headline of this article is so dumb that I refuse to use, but omg! Fassy already has a vision of them together still in old age! :p

  • ET video interview on the red carpet, where this quote came from!
I’ve got to be totally selfish about this one, James came up with a good one that he would sort of spread love everywhere, which I thought was good. But I’d like to fly. So maybe I could sort of give him a piggyback and he could spread love all over as I’m flying all over the place.

Michael Fassbender (his answer for ET’s question “What mutant power would you like to have” on the red carpet for X-Men: First Class)
He also talks about his fondest memory again :P

  • Video of them singing (or rather, attempting to haha), which includes THIS:

THEY ARE SO IN WUV, THESE TWO GUYS. My brain has exploded a few times.
[Many thanks to tumblr, various fan sites & google for the above links.]

NOW BRB WHILE I GO CATCH UP ON OTHER FASSY MOVIES. This was almost unavoidable after watching Jane Eyre last weekend and now all this :D
