Success!
I found a way to get my cat to cooperate with receiving fluids! All I have to do, it turns out, is hold him on my lap while the fluid drips in, and cuddle him, and rub his ears! He purred and rubbed his cheek against me and licked my hand and gave me big, serious, melting Cat Looks of Love. He sat still for the full dose of fluid and I let him stay on my lap afterwards, scratching him behind the ears and telling him what a good cat he was, until he finally decided to jump off.
We've tried this for three days and it's worked every time. Last night was a partial success because he leaned forward to lick his paws and the needle slipped out, but today worked perfectly.
I knew there had to be a way to do this! And it's perfectly in character for my cat -- what he loves best is being stroked and loved.
