I'm still new at knitting, and I'm not sure what this means...

I found out the other day that my sister-in-law is having a baby, (Yippie!) so I want to knit a beginning/easy level sweater since it's going to be a winter baby. (This is the first non-potholder or dishcloth project.) I found a really cute pattern, in that Greatings from Knit Cafe book, that looks pretty easy, it's just that I don't understand something about the pattern. Part of the pattern is in a "Honeycomb stitch" and it says "slip 1 st" I checked the glossary and it said to "slip stitch(es) as if to purl". I tried looking for directions on-line but after an hour, I thought I'd be better off just asking. What am I being asked to do?
