313 - Write about something old, something new or something borrowed.

Tanis was a strange planet; filled with life, lush and green but at the same time so barren and dead that it was near impossible for her - a scientist - to see the way that life could be, the way life could flourish.

Their new home, their new earth, was great, the same climate as the place of their origin and nine-hundred years of uncharted growth meant that the planet was more than ready to support life. But Nadia couldn’t help but consider how things were supposed to go, how carefully the genetics of those 1600 survivors were to be mapped so that they didn’t perish due to inbreeding.

She knew that they would have to breed carefully. It might have taken all the fun out of it, but there was only one way to do it. Thankfully - and it was the only reason she was glad for this - the survivors were scientists and engineers, the people that worked on the Elysium and knew how important genetic diversity was. They had to make this place work and they had to look after this world better than they had the other, they were borrowing this place, this home. It wasn’t theirs to destroy like they had done their own home.

They were guests in someone else’s universe, someone else’s world. They had to be careful and tread softly else they would make the same mistakes and there was no way that they could just escape again. They were all that was left.

God, Nadia did not look forward to having to tell everyone that.

For now, she was happy to just be alive, sat in a life-pod with Bower, his eyes closed and their foreheads resting together, breathing in unpolluted air and feeling the adrenaline pumping through her, keeping the pain in her side at bay.
