“I hope,” Lex said flatly, “that someday you’ll see I’m not the same sort of man as my father.”

“You may want that to be true, Lex,” Jonathan scoffed, “but this old farmer knows the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree.”

Lex turned away, strode with feigned pride and purpose across the packed dirt of the yard. He fought with all his will to keep resignation out of his posture.

Jonathan was wrong.

And yet, the Clark of his imagination was still cautious to a fault, still hard of standards and short on trust.

Jonathan might also be right.
