The August day was blazing. Not that it bothered Clark at all; but he didn’t mind the rest, either, as everyone else slowed around him. Even his industrious parents gave up eventually, released him from his chores and sought shelter on the porch with a pitcher of lemonade.
Clark and Lex chose the shade of the orchard. They lay in silence for a while, listening to the buzzing locusts. Lex’s damp brow reclined easily against Clark’s bare chest.
Then, Clark realized. “What’s that you’re humming?”
“Don’t sit under the apple tree,” Lex sang softly, turning, “with anyone else but me.”
