Lower City, Corus | Sunday Evening

Apr 17, 2011 23:07

George slid into an open spot at the the dicing table, greeting the other lads with an open grin and sharp eyes. They were all men he’d known since he was just a minnow - some had been wee minnow with him, running errands and picking pockets, but others were hard-eyed older ones who’d been in the Rogues’ Court for more years than George had been alive. All the men looked tired somehow, defeated even. It was a look he’d noticed more and more during his visits home to the Lower City but even more so this time. Mayhap nothing had changed except him - mayhap he’d learned better how to see what a man was thinking after all them months watching Derek and every so often Connor.

He didn’t do much talking as they played, listening to the boasts and stories of the other men and wondering what it was that would bring them to life again. Twas an interesting question, and one he was pretty certain he was still too young to answer.

His coins weren’t too far from even when one of the lasses of the Court touched his shoulder and whispered the summons George had come to the Dancing Dove to hear. With a cocky grin thrown to his companions, George stood and followed the girl, appreciating the view and sparing a thought to wonder if he’d have a chance to get to know her better one day.

Twasn’t much more than half a mark later when George left the Rogue’s chamber and shrugged off offers to continue the dice game. He headed for the street, not enough lost in though to pay attention to any who might be following him but thinking hard nonetheless. The offer hadn’t been one he’d been expecting, and he didn’t know if he could accept it - or if he could refuse it without making a permanent enemy.

Time enough to worry about that. George squinted up at the sun as it dropped behind the Dove’s roof. Rispah would probably be done with Kyle now. Be good to wander over to find his friend and see what he wanted to spend the evening doing.
