I'm gonna get my hair relaxed, is it better to use the shampoo they give or the baking soda?

I've been more or less shampoo-free for two years now. I recently mentioned it to my fabulous grandma and she's interested in trying out the BS method. Her questions are:

What effects (if any) will it have on permed hair?

I'm contemplating getting my hair permed, as I like how I look with large curls but hate curling my hair.
