Hi everyone, so I'm new not only to the "no poo" method, but I haven't started yet, (also new to livejournal! bear with me!). I am familiar with no poo (my sister doesn't use shampoo at all but has a pixie cut so easier for her to manage than my longer hair) so I've learned a bit from her. My reason for not starting is because I have a bit of a problemo with my scalp. I have "break outs" of very dry, flakey (biiig flakes), sometimes red but not always, itchy skin all over my scalp. All this leads to secondary infections and needing cortico-steroids ug. I've been to multiple dermotologists and some think I have eczma (not confirmed but it runs in the family) some said I produce too much oil (which is weird because my hair is not oily at all...it's just right.) I've been using things like DHS (shampoo), Ketokonozal (which has been removed for further FDA review I think...), Other Tar shampoos like T-gel, and Clobetasol liquid ointment (steroid). The only thing that ever works is clobetasol but that's because it's a steroid...pfft. Basically my head is a walking pharmacy.
Anyways....
My hopes of going no poo are that this will clear up and it is just an oil over production problem, my fear....I'm going to get my secondary infections and will still need to be using things like Scalpicin (hydrocortizone) and Clobetasol to control my head from being unbearably itchy. The reason I'm deciding to do this now is from what happened today after I showered. I hadn't showered for 2 days and my hair was fine scalp seemed like it was healing and didn't have too many flakes (finally!!!). I showered because I went to the gym and was all sweaty and nasty so I shampooed my hair with (ug) head and shoulders that has almond oil in it and conditioned with L'Oreal Ever sleek sulfate free stuff that has sunflower something in it. I am now back at square one and miserable.....I find that when I don't shower the flakes on my head (sorry this is kinda yucky!) turn more scab like in texture and I can actually feel my nice happy scalp underneath the scabby/flakey things.
So my main questions outside of those walls of text are:
Does anyone else have/had this problem? If so did no pooing work or was it more complicated?
I don't have super oily hair, it only gets oily on day 2-3 of no showering or if it's summer time so my only concern is moisturizing because where I live is incredibly dry year round and I basically live in body lotion.
Another issue is that my water in my apartment is questionable....I know I've got hardwater is there anything I need to know about that concerning no-pooing? Also concerning water, I switch areas every couple months and the water is very different from each place. (College kid heh :] I go home once every 2-3 months)
Aside from that are the general questions of maintenance, I have short-ish (used to be bra strap length) hair. It is VERY thick, and sleek. I've never dyed it, not even temporary colors.
Would it be better to go cold turkey and see what happens or wean into it? (considering the issues with my lovely scalp >.>)
Ahh ok I will stop haha sorry this is REALLY long....but I'm dying for a solution to my poor scalp....I'm hoping this works!
