Today was the cat's 7th day without insulin, and his glucose readings are very steady at mid-80s post-prandial. He had a 74 which was closer to fasting; he nearly gnawed my arm off trying to get food while I was taking that one. We'll continue to monitor him every so often, and take him in for some related blood work, but for now he's doing fine. Some people say there may be a honeymoon/remission that eventually ends; we'll watch for that. FWIW he was on insulin for just about 1 month, at a very low dose.
One thing that has struck me is the essentially patient-directed treatment at our vet. Things there seem fairly chaotic, it's rare to see the same doctor twice in a row, and Gateway's treatment has been dictated in large part by what we decided it should be. For instance I plan to take Gateway in in another week for some blood tests because *I* think he should have them, at that time, not based on any direction from the vet. We are reasonably educated concerning diabetes so that was ok for us, but I can't help but wonder how things would have gone if we were relying more heavily on the vet for direction, or if there are more subtle issues we don't even know to ask about.
