Well, Jung

Today something happened that made me feel like a unicorn. I don't know if this is justified or not. I hope to find out soon.

Roofer #3 came out today, and said something very much like the others have said: significant structural repair is needed. It will be interesting to see how the cheapskate landlord deals with this one, since the HOA recommends them. I had this roofer give *me* an estimate so I know how much money I'm being dicked around over: just under $3k.

The Cats is home, finally, after going to the vet on Tuesday morning "just for the day". It turns out the type of insulin he's on (glargine/Lantus) is relatively new at this hospital, and between the 25 or so doctors there they've only treated maybe 30 cats with it. It does seem to be the best choice, and we feel it's the one most likely to get him to the point where he can be weaned off of it, but it's still a bit of a learning experience. Gateway's reaction definitely caught them by surprise - he went into hypoglycemic seizures and was put on a glucose drip for most of a day. Since his condition isn't that severe yet we're starting with a dose which we know will be too low (1 unit, 1/5th of what they tried initially), and will move it up from there.

All the stuff they had to do as a result of what happened would have added up to a hefty bill, ~$900, but the doctor felt bad about it and made a bunch of adjustments so the bill ended up a bit under $450. We filled Gateway's new prescriptions (insulin + syringes) tonight. They seemed a lot pricer than his other med (admittedly v cheap at < $6/month) until we realized that 1 bottle of insulin might very well last him a year, assuming it doesn't go bad. So on that basis it's quite affordable, really. [Edit: I finally read enough of the awesomely mind-numbing insert to see that the vial is only good for 28 days after you open it. So pricier than I'd thought but still cheaper than college!]

I'd like to be able to measure the cat's blood sugar at home, but the prospect of getting the blood out of him without giving up lots more of my own is daunting. Unless he suddenly develops a taste for needle play the meter I have now needs too much blood to be feasible. (It's a nice one but it does require larger samples than many.) The alternative is to bring the cat into the vet once a week or so. This is doable but I feel that the stress really distorts his blood sugar levels, so I'd prefer to test him when he's relaxed. (He won't be relaxed *after* I poke him, but by then I'll already have the sample.)

geekchick and I were actively invited to one Superbowl party, and kinda passively to another. The former was a very interesting possibility because M was invited; she's the only unresolved crush from my past still left unexplored. We parted very painfully, and I haven't seen her in ~15 years. As a good friend of mine might say, it's complicated, and I'm both anticipating and dreading the day I finally run into her again. As often happens the denouement is quite dull: she's not going to that party. (The other party would have a few people I'd like to meet but almost no one I know, including the host.) Honestly neither of us even knew when the Superbowl was, I only know one of the teams playing, and I found that out by accident. This should tell you how into football we are, and so it's most likely we won't go to either party. (Which kinda sucks because as terrifying as the thought is I'd really love to see M again.)
