The good news is that Luis is stable enough that tomorrow he can be transported to Tegucigalpa for surgery. The bad news is that this is the beginning of a very long road -- while he was fortunate to avoid any organ damage or brain injury, the reality is that he has 2 gunshot wounds to the face and is going to need major reconstructive and plastic surgery. The next good news is that in 2 days, y'all have contributed over 400 dollars! This exceeds my wildest expectations and I am so grateful to all of you. Tulio spoke with Luis's brother today and told him about our efforts and he cried when he found out that a bunch of strangers in a foreign country cared enough to help out in this way. The money is going to make a huge difference in the next few days -- as Honduras is a very poor country, things we take for granted like having credit or health insurance simply don't exist. Actually having this cash in hand means he will be able to get services from a surgeon. We'll be withdrawing the money tomorrow and wiring it along with what we collect from the Honduran communities in Durham and Clinton.
Like I said, this is the first step in a long road, so keep watching this space for pattern sales, yarn sales, and anything else I can think of. And if you have any great fundraising ideas, please feel free to pass them along!
