I've fallen way behind in my updates, even for me. I actually started writing out my blog post(s) on Sunday. I'm only now getting around to posting them.
This first post will cover my Kentucky trip. The second will be other thoughts and memories, as well as movie reviews (I think I've seen more movies in the past month than I have in a year).
The third post will be my book reviews. Had six to do this time around. Yeah, I was really behind!
First off, my trip to Kentucky last month was everything I’d hoped it would be, and then some. Getting there and back took longer than expected, close to eight hours each time; we hit two major construction sites going down and a heavy rainstorm on the way back up. That was the worst of it though, so I count my blessings.
The hotel my lil sis and I stayed at was a bit worn around the edges, but it was clean and comfortable, and that’s what matters. Indeed, I slept very well for me; I usually don’t sleep well, especially the first night, outside of my own home any more. Oh, for the days when I was young, and could sleep anywhere- and I do mean anywhere! Also, the staff was super sweet.
We got to the Rodgers’ house later than anticipated Friday night; indeed, I debated whether we should have just waited until the next morning. Glad we didn’t. Oh, one peculiarity- Kelly and I stayed in the Springs Motel, in Russell Springs, which was on Central Time. The Rodgers’ farm, about 15 miles away, was on Eastern Time. Only time it was something we had to watch was meeting up for breakfast the next day. But I’m getting ahead of myself.
As I said, we got to the Rodgers’ house and met Jeff first; the others had gone out to run errands. Kelly and I chatted with Jeff for a bit. He’s a sweet, quiet guy, really nice. The big moment of course is when everyone else returned, and me meeting Grace and Tammy for the first time. Wow. That was just amazing, seeing two people who had the same medical condition that I have. This is something I never dreamed would happen until about four years ago. The three of us group hugged tightly, and then all of us bonded over good food and great talk.
Tammy is awesome, I need to call her sometime. We have a good deal in common, beyond the Conradi’s. She, too, was involved in Girl Scouts and likes the outdoors. Tammy is also a talented clogger. I only know what clogging is because, as a Girl Scout, there was a workshop I took… while I was in Kentucky! Ha! Grace Is a cutie. I don’t think she quite knew what to make of me, although she loved to tease me by imitating my sneezes ha ha! For those of you who have never heard me sneeze, I have a high-pitched squeak of a sneeze that often makes people laugh.
Tammy came with her mother Linda, and Heather, one of her two daughters. It was great getting to know them!
The next morning, we all met up at The Bread of Life Café. Kind of reminded me a bit of a sprawling Cracker Barrel. There’s several dining areas, which is great for groups that wish to come in. And the food was delish! I got to try chocolate gravy for the first time. Yum! It’s sort of like chocolate fondue. I had it over a couple of buttermilk biscuits. That was divine.
We travelled around Liberty and visited several of the Mennonite shops in the area. Grace made a cute observation- the “adults” (Angie and Linda) were in front, those with Conradi’s (Tammy, her, and myself) were in the middle row, and the girls (Kelly and Heather) were in the back. Heh! Not sure that was by design but it worked.
There are a lot of neat little stores down there. In one, we found chocolates that looked like colorful gravel. We had a lot of fun pranking Jeff and Isaiah with those, ha ha!
Angie took Tammy and me on a tour of the farm in a side-by-side, something that reminds me of a cross between a Jeep and an ATV. A bit of culture shock. Before heading out, Angie said if we run into problems and she shouts gun, told me where to find it. Yeah, this city slicker has never handled a real gun in her life. Thankfully I think Tammy has, she wasn’t as … startled as I was.
That evening, I also had a chance to try chicken livers. Quite nice! Wouldn’t want a whole plate full but I liked the couple small pieces I have. Still, my favorite of course were the yummy buttermilk biscuits. Those are a weakness. Yum!
The next day, Kelly and I decided to go to the Corvette Museum, since both of us woke up much sooner than anticipated. Dad loves, and I mean LOVES, Corvette stuff (he bought my grandpa’s Corvette). So, the two of us raided the store for dad-appropriate gifts for Father’s Day the next weekend. Later, we met another friend of mine, from the Café, whom I haven’t seen in years. It was so cool to see Lane again and meet her two cute daughters. We didn’t get a chance to talk a good deal, the younger got rather antsy after she was done. We met at the White Squirrel Café, which had delicious stuffed French toast. Generous portions, too.
Dad loved his gifts, by the way, but he still managed to outdo us. Yes, on the day we are supposed to be pampering him, he gifted my mom and me with… HAMILTON TICKETS! Four of them! Kelly was in on it (and was scheduled to go another day with friends). So it will be mom, dad, Aunt Bec and me. WOOHOOOO!!! *dancedance* What was memorable was his presentation. He gave mom a card and said “Happy Anniversary, dear!” Now, the catch is, their anniversary is in September. Mom was really confused at this point because dad is usually really good at remembering important dates. I kinda wondered, though, ha ha. My dad is sneaky!
One month and four days away, but who’s counting, right?
